The Role
The Manager, Communications supports the USTA’s mission by generating positive, meaningful publicity and maximizing exposure for key initiatives across USA Tennis and the US Open. This role works closely with Directors and Managing Directors to develop and execute strategic publicity plans, serves as a primary media contact for assigned areas, and contributes to the overall storytelling efforts of the Content and Communications team.
 
Overall Communications Support
  • Support the promotion and storytelling of the Content and Communications team, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to deliver clear, consistent messaging.
  • Lead the writing and editing of press releases, news flashes, and media advisories for assigned areas.
  • Expand and cultivate national and local media relationships across print, broadcast, and digital outlets to proactively secure coverage for USTA initiatives and general tennis news.
  • Compile, distribute, and analyze reports related to media coverage and communications efforts.
USA Tennis
  • Serve as a key communications lead for all USA Tennis areas and as the primary lead for select initiatives, supporting the Director across all functions.
  • Lead development of Media Guides for USA Team events and create press releases and supporting media materials.
  • Provide communications support for the Pro Circuit, Collegiate, and Junior Tennis Pathways, including the creation and distribution of media assets.
  • Partner closely with USA Tennis staff to ensure effective positioning and promotion of events, initiatives, and issues.
  • Maintain strong relationships with captains, players, and coaches, leveraging them as spokespeople for USTA initiatives and grassroots promotion.
  • Manage on-site media relations at USA Team events, including press conferences, media availabilities, and community appearances as applicable.
US Open
  • Support communications initiatives for the US Open, including drafting and distributing news flashes and press releases.
  • Maintain media records and ensure accuracy of all media guide–related information.
  • Collaborate on the development and maintenance of a digital media kit before and throughout the tournament.
  • Contribute to the development of the US Open Media Guide.
  • Serve as communications lead for the US Open Junior Championships, including media coordination and publicity.
  • Support promotion of American players and U.S. success at the US Open.

Reporting and Monitoring
  • Monitor, track, compile, and analyze media coverage across all assigned areas.
  • Produce monthly, quarterly, and event-specific reports for internal leadership.
  • Maintain real-time tracking of coverage and be able to pull metrics and insights on short notice.
Departmental Duties
  • Oversee the media clipping process.
  • Write and distribute press releases and news flashes.
  • Pitch stories and secure media coverage.
  • Collaborate closely with all members of the Content and Communications team to support department-wide initiatives.
Who You Are
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or media relations.
  • Strong understanding of the sports industry.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Creative, resourceful, team-oriented, and self-motivated.

The expected range for the base salary for this position is $70,000 - $85,000. This range does not include any additional pay or benefits for which a person may qualify. The actual base salary offered is determined by several variables, including, as appropriate, the applicant's qualifications for the position, the years of relevant experience, their unique skills, and the location from which they will be performing the job.
