Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reporting financial results, and ensure the reporting results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organized, and collaborative, with strong leadership and communication skills. Confidentiality, reliability, and adaptability are essential, along with the ability to consistently meet deadlines in a dynamic business environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide financial decision-making by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain financial policies and internal controls.
- Oversee accounting operations, including payroll, billing, collections, and accounts payable.
- Manage HR-related functions such as benefits enrollment, onboarding, W-2s, and compliance tasks.
- Coordinate with IT to support software, email, and equipment needs.
- Process payroll and journal entries; oversee payroll taxes, 401(k), and insurance.
- Manage vendor invoices, payments, and banking relationships.
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
- Develop budgets, forecasts, and cash flow models.
- Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements and commission reports.
- Produce special reports and conduct financial analysis as needed.
- Monitor budget variances and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure systems meet operational and accounting requirements.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; advise leadership on legislative changes.
- Recruit, train, and manage finance staff (as needed).
- Support audits and tax filings.
- Maintain confidentiality of financial information and corporate strategy.
- Contribute to team and enterprise-wide goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting; CPA designation strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Experience with nonprofits and/or 501(c)(3) practices preferred.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational ability and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; experience with payroll and accounting systems required.
