Player Operations: Equipment Manager
Primary Role
The Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment Operations will lead and oversee the equipment operations for Army West Point Athletics in support of approximately 1200 student-athletes who compete on 30 athletic teams.  Working with the Deputy Athletic Director, this role will establish a short and long-term vision for the most efficient and effective use of resources to support the equipment and apparel needs of the athletic department while maintaining alignment with the overall mission and vision of the Army West Point Athletic Department and the values of the United States Military Academy.  This role will work with the Deputy Athletic Director and the Deputy AD/Chief Operating Officer to establish equipment budgets for all athletic teams and internal department needs and will serve as the primary point of contact with Nike for all equipment and apparel ordering.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Strategy and Vision - 25% (10 Hours)
  • Working with the Deputy Athletic Director, establish a short and long-term vision for the most efficient and effective use of resources to support the equipment and apparel needs of the athletic department.
  • Work with the Deputy Athletic Director, the Deputy AD/Chief Operating Officer, and the Chief Financial Officer to establish long and short-term equipment budgets for all athletic teams and internal department needs.
  • Ensure that athletic equipment operations are conducted in compliance with NCAA rules and regulations while maintaining the high ethical standards of the Army West Point Athletics Department and the United States Military Academy. 

Operational Management - 25% (10 Hours) 
  • Recruit, hire, train, and manage a professional staff to assist in carrying out the goals and objectives for equipment operations.
  • Working with coaching staffs, determine the short and long-term needs of each team and the best use of each team’s allotted budget to meet their apparel and equipment needs.
  • Ensure that all teams and athletes adhere to Nike apparel and equipment contract as well as any supplemental contracts that are in place with other equipment and apparel partners.
  • Responsible to procure, account for and maintain uniforms, equipment, and gear for all athletes, coaches, and support staff.  Implement and maintain an inventory system that maintains visibility on and positive control over athletic apparel and equipment.
  • Work with the Deputy AD to establish and maintain policies and procedures of the equipment room, locker rooms and laundry facilities.
  • Work with the Deputy AD and the Associate AD for Military Operations to establish and maintain policies and procedures for the use of student equipment managers to support athletic teams.
  • Collaborate with the Compliance Office to ensure equipment operations are in compliance with NCAA guidelines.

Daily Operations - 25% (10 Hours)  
  • Work with team coaches to determine the equipment support required for practices and competitions, both home and away, and ensure it is met by assigning responsibility to full-time staff and student equipment managers.
  • Establish work priorities and equipment staff schedules.  Oversee and check on equipment operations as well as assigned employees and student equipment managers.
  • Make sure all equipment and gear are stocked, organized, and placed in a secure area and are being inventoried regularly.
  • Ensure that all equipment is certified, maintained, and cleaned in accordance with appropriate standards.
  • Assist with team practices and game day support as needed.

Apparel / Equipment Lead - 15% (6 Hours)   
  • Serve as the primary liaison with apparel, footwear, and equipment providers.  Ensures the most efficient use of resources by working with various vendors to provide the best value to the athletic department.
  • Create and design uniforms, practice apparel, and related artwork for athletic teams, support staff, and internal departments.
  • Ensure team apparel and equipment are within National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSEA) standards and are designed in accordance with Army West Point brand guidelines prior to order and distribution.
  • Work with head coaches and department leadership to establish long-term plan for uniform design and purchases.
  • Work directly with Nike as well as athletic department and Military Academy entities in the design of a unique gameday uniform and related sideline and retail apparel for the Army-Navy Football Game.

Additional Duties - 10% (4 Hours)    
  • Plan, coordinate, and complete special projects as assigned by the Deputy Athletic Director
  • Support Recruiting efforts of teams with equipment layout, equipment room tours, and presentations
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Level of Decision Making
The level of decision making in this role is high.  This position serves as a mid-level manager within Army West Point Athletics and will be entrusted to routinely make decisions and establish policies and procedures to efficiently procure, maintain and account for millions of dollars of equipment. He or she will advise senior level leaders within the Athletic Department on equipment operations and allocation of resources.

Scope of Impact
The chosen candidate will serve as a mid-level manager within Army West Point Athletics and will be responsible for working with head and assistant coaches from 30 teams as well as support staff from across the department to operate athletic equipment operations in support of more than 1200 student-athletes.  He or she will supervise and provide direction to as many as 8 full-time staff members as well as up to 100 student equipment managers.  The chosen candidate will be entrusted to routinely make decisions and establish policies and procedures to efficiently procure, maintain and account for millions of dollars of equipment while abiding by all NCAA, Military Academy and Athletic Department policies, rules, regulations, and operational procedures.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs
  • Ability to work while standing for extended periods of time
  • Ability to operate vehicles and athletic equipment

Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) or equivalent combination of education and experience is required
  • Association (AEMA) certification

Minimum Experience
  • 5+ Years of full-time experience in athletic equipment operations at the collegiate or professional level
  • Demonstrated experience in ordering, fitting, repairing, and maintaining athletic equipment
  • Experience planning and maintaining budgets
  • Knowledge of sanitary and cleansing protocol of athletic equipment
  • Experience using an equipment inventory system

Preference given to candidates who display the following:
  • 3 or more years of Director level/Supervisory experience in athletic equipment operations in a Division 1 athletic department
  • Experience in designing athletic uniforms and/or creating artwork for athletic apparel

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and with professionalism in a fast-paced athletic environment 
  • Working knowledge of equipment inventory system
  • Knowledge of scoreboard/clock operations, coach headsets, and associated game day equipment
  • Knowledge of sanitary and cleansing protocol of athletic equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office/Excel
  • Driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 50 + lbs.

Require Equipment Experience
  • Athletic apparel, protective gear, and practice/game equipment along with the associated equipment needed to repair and maintain it.
  • Loading and unloading an equipment truck including the use of a lift gate
  • Golf carts, Gators, Passenger Vans, and Cargo Trucks
  • Laundry machines and associated cleaning products
  • Sanitization and cleansing chemicals used to clean athletic facilities and equipment
