A quick summary about the Director of Security role:

This IS NOT supporting basketball operations (players, front-office, etc.). The Director of Security (Director) will have responsibility for matters related to safety and security for the Orlando Magic Business Operations.  

You will coordinate efforts to provide a safe environment for Orlando Magic employees, guests, executives and clients. You will establish and maintain relationships with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and emergency services personnel, and serve as the Magic’s primary contact with these groups. Serving as the primary Magic security liaison, you will collaborate with Orlando Magic Basketball Operations Security, NBA league security and with Osceola Magic and Orlando Solar Bears affiliates to achieve maximum client and customer satisfaction.

The Director will oversee and coordinate programs in the areas of Security Operations (i.e., Site Management, Event Security, Crisis Management, Facility Security Management/Liaison, Stakeholder/Law Enforcement Liaison, Intelligence Analysis, and Business Operations Security Administration (i.e., Investigations, Education, and Internal Support).

  

What the Director of Security role will be do and be responsible for:
  • In partnership with the organization’s senior executives, directs the development of an effective organizational security strategy which will assess and mitigate risk, maintain continuity of operations, and protect personnel and property, consistent with the Magic’s strategic plan.
  • Develops and implements security policies, standards, guidelines and procedures to ensure the effective operation of organizational security efforts.
  • Remains abreast of state-of-the-art security technologies, strategies, and innovations and makes appropriate recommendations to enhance the organization’s security footprint.
  • Oversees and/or liaisons with directors and vendors/3rd parties who safeguard the Company’s assets, and who provide for the physical safety of employees and visitors. This includes coordination with third-party arena security and administrative office security.
  • Assures security is properly integrated into the overall planning process for all Business Operations organizational events.
  • Informs the TBD and other senior executives of pertinent security and intelligence information that could impact the organization’s operation and makes recommendations to mitigate risk.
  • Provides support as required to Basketball Operations (BOPs) Security to ensure robust yet unobtrusive security measures for players, coaches, and BOPs staff while at the Kia Center or as required from time to time.
  • Oversees physical protection capabilities, including asset protection, access control systems and video surveillance at Business Operations managed facilities
  • Budgets for and directs the purchase of security-related goods and services.
  • Liaisons with other Magic entities to support information technology security, workplace violence prevention, and employee education and awareness (to include the development of drills, exercises, and penetration/ “red team” tests).
  • Oversees critical incident/crisis management response planning to maintain, update, and test Emergency Operating Plans (EOPs) and related policies, including evacuation, shelter-in-place, severe weather, and other incident response procedures.
  • Engages and manages work with outside consultants as appropriate for independent security audits, program enhancements, training, and other related assistance.
  • Leads the development and management of corporate and criminal intelligence information.
  • Liaisons with Magic entities to manage security for threat mitigation efforts, including staff terminations.
  • Effectively liaisons with NBA security personnel to ensure compliance with applicable NBA rules and regulations.
  • Oversees organization’s Business Operations’ internal investigations, security breaches, and other matters requiring examination.
  • All other duties as assigned.
      What the Director of Security needs to have:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Business, Hospitality, or equivalent work experience is required; advanced degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CPP, PSP, Crowd Management) preferred.
    • At least five (5) years of experience in sports & entertainment, security, law enforcement and/or corporate security is required, with a demonstrated record of progressively responsible experience.
    • Extensive supervisory experience required. 
    • Ability and willingness to work all Orlando Magic home games (45+ annually) plus a select number of non-Magic related events (21-40 annually), including nights and weekends and be on-call as necessary based on the changing priorities of the department.
    • Proven ability to effectively interact with a myriad of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
    • Deep understanding of security operations, crowd management, emergency response, and risk management best practices.
    • Experience working with law enforcement, fire/life safety, emergency services, and regulatory agencies.
    • Familiarity with advanced security technologies (CCTV, access control, incident management systems)
    • Proven ability to interpret and apply league standards (e.g., NBA Arena Security Procedures & Guidelines).
    • Well-versed in critical incident management. National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) certification a plus.
    • Familiarity with advanced security and guest-facing technologies.
    • Strong financial acumen and experience managing departmental budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate and positively interact in a diverse multi-cultural environment.
    • Prior experience with security and special event planning, threat assessment and analysis and intelligence information assessment.
    • Experience with professional sports teams is required with NBA experience preferred.
    • High level of personal integrity, as well as the ability to professionally handle confidential matters, and show an appropriate level of judgment and maturity. Honest and trustworthy, exhibiting highest ethics.
    • Excellent leadership skills; must be able to lead teams in the accomplishment of goals.
    • High degree of initiative, dependability and ability to work with little supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze facts and exercise discretion and sound judgment in making conclusions.
    • Ability to research and remain current with industry security trends, as well as changing government and state laws.
    • Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills.
    • Proven proficiency in developing security policy and procedures.
    • Demonstrated commitment to education, including experience in developing and leading corporate-wide training initiatives.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of management concepts and techniques needed to lead and oversee the progress of a variety of programs and project activities.
    • Demonstrated ability to support a safe and hazard free workplace through practice of personal safety and vigilance in the identification of safety or security hazards.
    • Ability to lead and manage investigative efforts related to incidents involving the organization.
    • Create and manage operating plans and budgets
    • Aptitude to manage contractors and contracted security personnel.
    • Adept at securing the cooperation of others to achieve strategic and tactical results.
    • Must be able to travel occasionally.
    • Proficient in all Microsoft Office products and other related computer skills required.
    • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure.
    • Strong organizational skills, time management skills and attention to detail required.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on business writing skills.
    • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects.
    • Ability to work independently without supervision, be self-directed and demonstrate initiative.
    • Strong team synergy skills and ability to work collaboratively with others whom you have no direct authority over.
    • Excellent ability to establish rapport with others and ability to build strong interpersonal relationships.
