Job Title: Software Developer, Basketball Data Strategy

Department: Basketball Data Strategy, Basketball Operations

Reports to: Senior Software Developer & Basketball Analyst, Basketball Data Strategy

Position Summary: The primary responsibility of the Software Developer, Basketball Data Strategy is to create interactive tools, extract insights, and communicate results for various sub-departments within Basketball Operations, including but not limited to front office, coaching, scouting, and training staff. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining core features within the internal basketball data strategy platform (web application) and supporting the buildout of a mobile application for players and staff. This position requires technical depth across the application stack, with a focus on building performant user-facing features. In addition, the position requires self-motivation to learn new skills and apply innovative techniques & visualizations to ongoing work. The Developer will work under and alongside the Senior Developer to learn infrastructure, best practices, and departmental design language in creating new tools.

Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities**): 

  • Collaborate with the Senior Developer to create apps providing insights around on-court strategy, player acquisition, asset valuation, and player development
  • Build/develop/maintain parts of the internal basketball operations website (e.g. Player Profiles, Scouting Reports)
  • Create/enhance mobile app development platform utilized by players and staff
  • Create/enhance visualization tools that turn player data into charts, graphs, and interactive tools
  • Partner with other members of the staff, including but not limited to coaching, salary cap strategy, G League, strength & conditioning, training, scouting, and player development, to build interdepartmental needs

**Responsibilities subject to change based on organizational needs and direction from management.

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience

Technical Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of professional work experience in software engineering strongly preferred
  • Mobile development – Experience building iPhone apps with Swift (strongly preferred)
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks (e.g. Vue, React) and related technology stacks
  • Proficiency in component-based development, building scalable UI infrastructure, and other front-end architecture patterns; can build UIs that are organized and scalable
  • Backend development: experience building RESTful services and implementing caching solutions like Redis
  • Experience with Git workflows, code review practices, and deployment pipelines
  • Experience working with relational database design and query optimization
  • Cloud experience: familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) for API deployment and scaling

Location: El Segundo (offices M-F), occasional off-site events, Crypto.com Arena for Lakers home games when necessary

Travel: Less than 10% of the time (league events, etc.)

Hours: Regular office hours (9am – 5:30pm M-F) with flexible work from home allowances within reason; must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required within reason (e.g. when team has a game)

The pay range for this role is $160,000 - $175,000 annually. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and certifications. In addition to those factors, we consider the relative pay of our current employees in similar positions when making a final offer.
