Reports to: Director, Basketball Operations

Position Summary: The Director, Team Security for the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) and South Bay Lakers (G League) at the UCLA Health Training Center (the “Facility”) and Crypto.com Arena (the “Arena”) is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of all Lakers’ and South Bay Lakers’ players, coaches, basketball operations staff, and player visitors (“Basketball personnel”). This role will involve close collaboration with building security teams (ASEC) at the Facility and local law enforcement, implementation of security protocols at the Facility and the Arena and providing a secure environment for all team-related activities at the Facility and the Arena. The Director will also handle incident response and risk assessments as it pertains to Basketball personnel at the Facility and the Arena to uphold a culture of safety.

Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities)

  • Facility Security Management for Basketball personnel
    • Oversee all security operations for Basketball personnel at the Facility and the Arena, ensuring a secure environment for Basketball personnel.
    • Develop, implement, and update security protocols for the Facility and the Arena tailored to the needs of Basketball personnel.
    • Conduct regular security audits and risk assessments.
    • Collaborate with building security teams to align security practices and policies for Basketball personnel at the Facility and the Arena.
    • Coordinate Facility access control systems for Basketball personnel.
    • Monitor player travel and offseason movement, proactively developing contingency plans for those visiting high-risk regions.
  • Event and Team Activity Security
    • Coordinate security plans for team practices, workouts, meetings, and games at the Facility and the Arena.
    • Partner with ASEC to provide safety oversight for Basketball personnel during SBL games, special events, media sessions, and public appearances held at the Facility.
    • Ensure proper protection and logistical ease for Basketball personnel ingress and egress to the Facility and the Arena.
  • Emergency Response and Crisis Management
    • Develop and execute emergency response protocols for the Facility and the Arena for various incidents, including medical emergencies, weather-related events, and security threats.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for incident reporting and investigation at the Facility and the Arena as it relates to the players, coaches and family members.
  • Partnership and Communication
    • Build strong relationships with building security staff, law enforcement, and emergency services to enhance security coordination at the Facility and the Arena.
    • Provide regular security briefings and training for team staff and personnel pertaining to the Facility and the Arena.
    • Communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, ensuring alignment on safety and security goals at the Facility and the Arena (i.e. Vice President, Game Operations & Entertainment, President, Business Operations, Vice President, Facilities & Building Operations)
  • Compliance and Documentation
    • Maintain accurate records of security incidents, reports, and protocols at the Facility and the Arena as they pertain to Basketball personnel.
    • Ensure compliance with NBA, G League, and local security regulations concerning player, coaching staff and basketball operations staff at the Facility and the Arena.

Education (Required/Preferred):

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, security management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., certified protection professional, physical security professional) are a plus.
  • Must possess a valid permit/license to carry a firearm and meet all state and federal requirements for armed security personnel

Previous Experience:

  • Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in security management, law enforcement or related field.
  • Experience in sports and entertainment venue security is highly desirable.
  • Proven leadership experience in coordinating security teams and managing high-profile events.

Technology Capabilities:

  • Proficiency in security technologies, including surveillance systems, access control systems and emergency communication tools.
  • Familiarity with incident management software and report generation tools.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles as they relate to facility operations.

  • Ability to lead and coordinate with multiple stakeholders effectively.
  • Strong observational skills to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for briefing and reporting.
  • Quick decision-making ability under pressure.
  • Handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate with multiple stakeholders effectively.
  • Ability to respond to physical incidents and conduct security walkthroughs as needed.

 

Location: El Segundo; must be available for all NBA and G League practices, shoot arounds and games that take place at UCLA Health Training Center.  Downtown Los Angeles: must be available for all NBA games that take place at Crypto.com Arena.

Travel: Must be able to travel on all road trips with the Los Angeles Lakers during the NBA season.

The pay range for this role is $180,000 to $200,000 . Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and certifications. In addition to those factors, we consider the relative pay of our current employees in similar positions when making a final offer.
