Summary:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher Coordinator is responsible for planning and implementing daily logistics (including tracking and reporting daily Scholar Athlete attendance), lead classroom time activities, develop thorough and creative alternative instructional plans to prevent summer slide, other activities related to academics, baseball/softball, Team Time, and other activities, as requested. 

Summer Programming Schedule:

  • Mandatory Training: Week of June 17 (or after completion of current school year)
  • Programming: June 26– August 2
  • Typical Programming Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

 

The Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher is expected to be at the Academy for summer programming during the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm and will attend all academy field-trips, as requested. The Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher is also expected to attend a variety of evening and weekend activities, as well as mandatory training and professional development programs provided by the Academy.

 

The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (“Academy”) is the programmatic arm of Washington Nationals Philanthropies. The Academy is a year-round educational and athletic facility with a mission of using baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among at-risk Washington, D.C., youth. We are looking for a Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher to manage and optimize the various systems needed to execute this vision.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and lead classroom instruction, and support mealtime, gathering time/Team Time, field trips, and inclement weather activities.
  • Submit lesson plans in advance to the Program Manager.
  • Maintain an organized classroom setting, support oversight of transition from classrooms to the field for Scholar Athletes and other learning activities.
  • Manage classroom behavior and collaborate with the Classroom Coordinator to execute lesson plans.
  • Participate in and provide effective oversight of scholar-athletes during field-trips and to and from the Academy.
  • Coordinate with the appropriate After-School Academy Baseball/Softball Coordinator and other program staff for daily logistics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 2+ years of relevant experience in youth-based sports or academic activities
  • 1+ years of relevant youth development experience and/or teaching experience
  • College degree preferred

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary to perform essential functions

  • Ability to manage the classroom setting and design and lead assignments and lessons in STEM (science, technology, engineering and/or math) for students in grades three through eight
  • Commitment to working with youth and families in a low-income, urban community; belief that all students can achieve at high levels
  • Commitment to achieving the articulated objectives of the Academy for scholar-athletes, staff, and the community at-large
  • Demonstrated leadership and motivational skills
  • At the Academy during the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM Monday-Friday during our 6 week summer program. Time may vary due to special events that may require this person to be present (e.g. fundraising events, field trips, retreats, etc.)

 

Physical/Environmental Requirements

Field: The Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher will be subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and will be exposed to inclement weather of varying degrees. The Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher will function in a high activity sports venue. In addition, the Summer Academy Lead Classroom Teacher is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, run, jump, and climb up/down stairs.
