Greenville Drive Organization Overview
The Greenville Drive had its inaugural season in Greenville’s West End Field in April, 2006. The team is the Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox and is a member of the South Atlantic League. The Drive’s affiliation with the Boston Red Sox has been in place since 2005 and will remain in place through the 2020 season and hopefully for many years beyond. The Drive play at Fluor Field in Downtown Greenville – a mini replica of iconic Fenway Park – complete with its own “Green Monster” and manual scoreboard in left field.
In its inaugural season in 2006, the Drive’s ballpark West End Field received recognition as Ballpark of the Year besting all other newly constructed stadiums across professional sports, including the new Major League ballpark in St. Louis. In 2008, the Drive’s stadium was officially named “Fluor Field” after the Drive announced a naming rights agreement with Fluor Corporation – the world’s largest engineering & construction management company. Fluor Field annually hosts 70 Greenville Drive baseball games, 30-35 amateur baseball games and approximately 100+ high-profile corporate, community & philanthropic events with organizations such as Greenville Health System, Elliott Davis, the United Way, March of Dimes, Blood Connection and the YMCA.
For over 12 years, the Greenville Drive has created a highly visible and widely embraced community engagement platform at Fluor Field, reaching over 1 million ballpark guests and digital followers across the Upstate of South Carolina each year. This broad based platform positions the Drive as a community entity that businesses and community organizations alike can utilize to achieve critical objectives. Working closely with the leading corporations, associations and community-based organizations that shape the quality of life in the Upstate, the Drive have formed many strategic partnerships all of which positively impact the quality of life and economic vitality of the Region. From Education to Entrepreneurism, from Youth Leadership to Healthy Living, and from Regionalism to Workforce Development, the Drive have creatively and continuously partnered with leading organizations to positively impact these important aspects of our Region’s economic health and vitality.
Position Summary: Director of Merchandise and Planning
As the Director of the Drive’s merchandise and planning function, this individual is responsible for developing and managing all merchandise strategies using business acumen to achieve productivity and financial goals while aligning to Greenville Drive brand direction and objectives. The merchandise function is a critical aspect of the Drive’s business, growing in importance each season. The Drive have invested heavily in this function including a complete redesign of the Team Store and integration of a state-of-the-art point of sale system in 2017.
The Greenville Drive is positioned for success across all aspects of merchandising via both in-store, online sales and through merchandising partnerships in the Community. The Drive’s primary Team Store – the Firehouse – is open year-round and located directly outside the gates of Fluor Field on the City of Greenville’s award-winning Main Street.
As the director of the Drive’s merchandise and planning function, this individual will be responsible for managing and operating all on-site locations, including the creation of interactive and unique in-store experiences to increase store traffic. Furthermore, this individual will be responsible for maintaining and growing our long-term relationships with local businesses that carry Greenville Drive merchandise.
The Director of Merchandise and planning is a critical member of the Drive team, responsible for overseeing, managing, and executing all aspects of the Drive’s various merchandise locations and partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. This individual will seek to maximize the potential of the Drive’s merchandise business by positioning the Drive as one of the leaders in all of Minor League Baseball, both online and in-store. The following descriptions are all measures of what success will ultimately look like in this position:
1. Strategic Oversight & Planning
a. Construct, oversee, and manage a year-round calendar of activities that drive individuals to the Team Store, especially during the off-season. The Drive’s Team Store should be managed to maximize our relevance in the community on a year-round basis.
b. Oversee all online sales, including shipping all products from the Greenville Drive Team Store. Aggressively manage and promote Greenville Drive merchandise via multiple online sales channels, including the Drive website and social media platforms.
c. Design and rotate the layout of the Team Store to provide a seamless shopping experience for the customer.
2. Marketing & Outreach
a. Maintain existing partnerships and develop new mutually-beneficial partnerships with local business and community organizations.
b. Design and create marketing and promotion strategies centered around specific products or themes during the off-season to increase foot traffic in the Team Store.
3. Relationship Management
a. Order, price and maintain merchandise inventory across multiple locations throughout Fluor Field and with other local businesses and organizations that stock Greenville Drive merchandise.
b. Develop and manage relationships with Minor League Baseball licensing companies and preferred Minor League Baseball merchandise vendors.
4. Talent Management
a. Lead all staffing needs related to the Drive’s merchandise business. This includes direct oversight of the existing staff in addition to appropriately staffing all 70 Drive games, amateur baseball games, special events and non-gameday staffing.
b. Ensure smooth and streamlined shared resource management across all Drive departments for merchandise purposes (e.g., Finance/Accounting, Sales team integration, Marketing/Sponsorships, etc.)
5. Merchandise Reporting & Financial Performance
a. Work with the Drive’s General Manager and Vice President of Finance to construct and manage a merchandise tracking document that helps track daily sales and financial performance. This tracking document should outline the financial performance of in-store vs online sales, gameday vs non-gameday sales, and other relevant metrics to track against the overall Greenville Drive annual budget.
b. Prepare merchandise sales reports on a daily and monthly basis, which are incorporated into the overall Greenville Drive financial statements.
c. Prepare deposit reports for all merchandise sales on a daily basis.
d. Conduct monthly physical inventory counts on all merchandise products on-hand.
e. Manage and operate the Greenville Drive’s merchandise point of sale system, including loading new products purchased and recording daily sales transactions.
- 4-year college degree from an accredited college or university preferred
- 5 or more years of experience in merchandise and retail sales preferred
- Be a team-leader with the ability to manage relationships with internal and external partners
- Must be flexible and able to adjust within a fast-paced work environment with shifting deadlines and schedules. Must also be a multi-tasker with a strong work-ethic
- Be a creative thinker and a problem solver – someone who can bring innovative ideas to grow the brand and the business and be capable of executing those ideas
- Strong conceptual planning, creative vision and innovation skills
- Knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, retail point-of-sale systems and Photoshop preferred
- Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with people at all levels within the organization and community
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and nights during Greenville Drive home games, amateur baseball games and other events hosted at Fluor Field
