The Sacramento River Cats are seeking a Communications & Baseball Operations Intern to support the organization's communications, media relations, and baseball operations efforts throughout the season. This role provides hands-on experience in professional baseball and serves as a key support position for game day communications, media operations, player appearances, and baseball information distribution.

The ideal candidate possesses a strong knowledge of baseball, excellent communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This individual will work closely with the Communications Coordinator, Team Broadcaster and various departments to ensure media, fans, staff, and baseball personnel receive accurate and timely information while helping deliver a first-class experience at Sutter Health Park.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparing and distributing game day media materials, including game notes, stat packs, rosters, transaction reports, lineups, and postgame notes.
  • Assist with compiling and distributing player transaction information, statistics, and baseball-related updates to internal departments and ballpark staff.
  • Support media credentialing, press box operations, and game day media requests.
  • Assist with press box catering coordination, setup, and cleanup.
  • Assist in coordinating player appearances, autograph sessions, ceremonial first pitches, and other community or promotional events.
  • Assist with tracking and reporting media coverage and impressions as part of monthly communications reporting.
  • Help maintain media databases, archives, and organizational records.
  • Assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing baseball statistics and performance information.
  • Support baseball operations as needed with team travel logistics and player coordination.
  • Help create a welcoming and professional environment by addressing questions, requests, and concerns from media and baseball personnel.
  • Support game day operations and special events as assigned.
  • Maintain professionalism while representing the River Cats organization at all times.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Knowledge and experience reading, analyzing, and interpreting baseball statistics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with coworkers, media members, and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, and Adobe InDesign
  • Ability to quickly learn new software systems and reporting tools.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Skills & Competencies

  • Previous experience working in sports communications, media relations, collegiate athletics, baseball operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with Minor League Baseball, Major League Baseball, and baseball statistical platforms.
  • Experience working game days, live events, or in a customer-facing environment.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on the baseball and event schedule.
  • Ability to work in both office and outdoor ballpark environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to move throughout the ballpark during events and game days.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds as needed.

Compensation

This position is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt role with an expected pay of $16.90/hr.
