Facility Operations/Event Staff: Grounds Crew/Turf Management

This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day operations for all field/landscape maintenance at Ed Smith Stadium and Buck O’Neill Baseball Complex (BOBC).

  • Manage, hire, train, and evaluate all grounds crew staff members on an annual basis. Inputting and budgeting employee hours based upon workload and upcoming field rentals to maximize amount of work being accomplished while limiting overtime hours. Plan and execute employee schedules through ADP software.
  • Develop short term (annual) and long term (3-5 years) field maintenance plans around scheduled activities (both baseball and non-baseball).
  • Maintaining the playing fields at a professional level, year-round. Creating daily schedules for each field for task including but not limited to, mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizing, chemical applications, clay work, mound prep, aeration, topdressing, irrigation repairs, and verticutting.
  • Develop and maintain records of all field maintenance, day-to-day journals/records, supply costs/needs, and irrigation repairs through Hippo software.
  • Identify problem areas, diagnose issue, and apply solution in a timely manner while following all federal, state and local regulations with regards to fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. (Weeds, Diseases, Insect Damage, Irrigation Coverage, and overall field conditions)
  • Manage irrigation programs/run times throughout the year. Adjust for rainy and drought periods of the year. Repair work on all irrigation heads, pipes, and valves to keep the fields maintained at a professional level.
  • Collaborate with management on developing and maintaining annual budget.
  • Work cooperatively with Orioles-Sarasota Operations staff and Orioles coaching staff to maintain line of communication and flow of information on grounds. Identify facility/building maintenance issues and notify/assist Facilities Manager of problems.
  • Maintaining communication/relationship with Sarasota County Parks & Recreation Department to cooperatively keep operations running efficiently day-to-day.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Turf Management or related field; or substantial industry experience 
  • Minimum of 5 years in field management with a professional team
  •  Extensive knowledge in field irrigation and equipment
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment and delivering results
  • Outstanding writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • The ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization/time management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Florida Pesticide Applicators License on an annual basis • Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, nights, weekends, holidays • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pound and work outside in heat, rain, wind, etc.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook
