Position Overview:
The Rockford Rivets are seeking a motivated and passionate Journalism/Public Relations Intern to join our media team for the upcoming season. This is a hands-on, unpaid position that provides valuable experience in sports journalism, content creation, and public relations for a college baseball team. The ideal candidate will be eager to learn about the sports industry, possess strong writing and communication skills, and have a keen interest in baseball. The journalism interns will report directly to the Director of Marketing & Social Media and the Director of Digital Media. This summer internship program runs from mid-May to late August. All interns are required to be available for each home game (36), along with any additional events assigned throughout the season.
Please note: This internship is unpaid, and candidates must be actively enrolled in a college or university program that allows them to receive academic credit for the internship.
Responsibilities
- Write game recaps for home and away games, player features, and team updates for the Rivets’ website, social media channels, and other marketing materials.
- Post game updates on twitter for home and away games
- Attend all 36 home games, and team events to gather content, conduct interviews with players, coaches, and staff, and provide coverage for both digital and print media.
- Work closely with the marketing/social media team to brainstorm story ideas, highlight key players, and promote team initiatives.
- Will be required to work office/stadium hours on non-game days. All other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.
- Passion for sports journalism, with a particular interest in baseball.
- Proficiency in social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of sports reporting and media relations.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Previous experience with graphic design is a plus but not required.
