Overview

The President is responsible for the overall administration of the league, including enforcement of the league bylaws, rules and regulations. In addition, the League President is responsible for monitoring compliance with and enforcing certain aspects of the National Association Agreement (NAA), the Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA), the Official Baseball Rules (OBR) and the collective bargaining agreement with the Association of Minor League Umpires (AMLU).

The President reports to the Northwest League Board of Directors. The position is a full-time independent contractor position during the season (May – September) and part-time during the rest of the year. Outside employment is allowed, but the League President may not have any ownership, financial, employment, consulting or contractual relationship with any Northwest League club. Prior Baseball experience is required. Also, it is preferred that the League President reside in the Pacific or Mountain Time Zone of the United States. Candidate may work from a home office.

Umpire Coordination and Baseball Operations Management Duties:

Manages and runs all processes related to the Northwest League’s (NWL) umpires.
Works in tandem with PBUC staff to finalize umpire staff for the beginning of each season, arranging for umpires to travel to the NWL.
Ensures compliance with all aspects of the collective bargaining agreement with the AMLU.
Plans and manages all pre-season meetings with the umpires.
Handles umpire relations when needed and counsels/coaches and may discipline umpires if required
Provides feedback of the NWL umpires with the MiLB Umpire Development staff to assist them in the evaluation of the umpires.
Prepares the umpire schedule using proper parameters.
Ensures each umpire crew has the proper supplies they need.
Arranges the transportation for each umpire crew throughout the baseball season, and ultimately arranges for umpire to travel home at the conclusion of the season.
Coordinates the use of substitute umpires to fill in when an NWL umpire is unable to work due to injury, promotion, etc.
Responsible for selecting the requisite number of umpires to work the All-Star Game and playoffs
Responsible for reimbursing the umpires for legitimate expenses (travel expenses to/from the league, airline baggage fees, gas, tolls, internet access fees, etc.) in a timely manner.
Determines appropriate penalties that may be levied on anyone ejected from a NWL game after reading reports and consulting with appropriate assigned parties.
Documents requests for fines in the case of penalties that result in fines.
Manages the administration of payroll for the umpires.
Handles all AMLU dues and submitting the dues to the AMLU in a timely manner.
At the end of each season, is responsible for reporting the total payroll to the PBUC office to allow for a reconciliation of umpire workers compensation insurance premiums.
The responsibilities for the umpires often require work beyond normal business hours during the season as needed.
Prepares and distributes the notebook with league information and policies to the umpires, field managers and general managers. The League President also distributes lineup cards to the teams prior to the commencement of the season and ensures that the annual posters are sent to the teams.

League Office Operations Duties:

Monitors compliance with MiLB and MLB rules, policies and guidelines.
Confirms compliance with the various required filings (Standard Financial Reports; Statement of Club Ownership & Affiliations; Baseball-Related Debts; Radio, TV and Internet webcast contracts; Game times and Hotel information; Ground Rules and PDC Equipment Cost Reconciliation).
Manages and presides over all NWL meetings as well as any necessary conference calls.
Coordinates and plans any meetings of the Board of Directors and league members, which includes selecting the site of the meetings, contracting for favorable hotel room rates, and arranging for appropriate meals and meeting rooms.
Ensures that the minutes of these meetings are accurately recorded and distributes the minutes to the league members as soon as they are available.
Manages the financial and accounting operations of the league and is the treasurer.
Responsible for the timely collection of the various dues and assessments from the clubs and the timely payment of league obligations.
Handles the proper stewardship of league funds.
Coordinates with the all the proper parties to create, approve and submit league budget and funds.
Reviews applications for regulated transactions involving league members (CITs, Relocations, etc.) and consults with the necessary advisors to evaluate applications before presenting them to the Board of Directors for consideration.
Works with the NWL Scheduling Committee and the schedule maker to provide a fair schedule in a timely manner.
Prepares, distributes, collects and tallies the ballots for the mid-year All-Star team and for the end-of-year awards.
Handles the orders for the various awards and presents awards to the respective winners.
Coordinates the NWL’s nominations for the annual awards presented by Minor League Baseball at the Baseball Winter Meetings.

League and Industry Relations

Navigates communication on operating items between operators and ownership within the league.
Acts as a forward thinker for matters that impact the league footprint and any threats to the league.
This would entail communicating on operating items with general managers and big picture items with ownership
Serves as a good-will ambassador for the NWL, making appearances as requested by member clubs.
Travels to the NWL clubs during the season to build relationships and to monitor the operation of each club. During or after the visits, he/she offers observations, kudos and suggestions for improvements to the clubs. Club visits also allow the president to make sure all Minor League Baseball and NWL rules and policies are being followed.
Acts as a mediator for any disagreements or disputes among NWL clubs.
Builds and maintains positive relationships with the Farm Directors for each of the league’s Major League affiliates and other relevant MLB personnel. Furthermore, with the staff at the Minor League Baseball office, and leverages those relationships to assist NWL clubs as needed.
Handles any media requests to address any NWL matter as needed.
Oversees the preparation of the annual NWL Record Book and assists in maintaining the NWL web site.

Experience Required

BA/BS degree required.
Excellent administrative skills with strong familiarity of accounting and bookkeeping processes required.
Experience understanding the game of baseball and all the operational nuances of the sport.
Experience working in operations and or leadership in a MILB team a plus.
Strong understanding of business practices is a requirement.
Strong understanding of contracts and experience with legal documents interpretation a must.
Excellent communication skills both verbally and written required.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in management.
Remote site management skills a plus.
