The Hillsboro Hops are a proud Minor League Baseball team, the High-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and a cornerstone of the Hillsboro community. Position Summary
The Controller is a key financial leader responsible for overseeing all accounting and finance functions for the Hillsboro Hops. This includes financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, payroll, internal controls, and compliance with all regulatory and league requirements. The ideal candidate will bring both strategic insight and hands-on experience to support the organization’s continued growth and success.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Finance Operations
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and the general ledger.
- Manage all aspects of the month-end and year-end close, including reconciliations and journal entries.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) by GAAP.
- Ensure proper accounting for all revenue and expense transactions across business lines (tickets, sponsorship, concessions, merchandise).
- Oversee capital expenditure accounting and reporting.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department leads and ownership.
- Prepare quarterly forecasts and monitor variances, investigating discrepancies and recommending solutions.
- Develop detailed cash flow forecasts and manage banking relationships.
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure timely and accurate reporting to Minor League Baseball and other governing bodies.
- Maintain and enhance internal control procedures to safeguard company assets.
- Serve as the primary contact for annual audits and coordinate with external auditors and tax professionals.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.
Leadership & Support
- Collaborate with leadership on strategic planning, financial modeling, and special projects, including new stadium development.
- Maintain and develop accounting policies and procedures.
- Provide finance-related support for the Hillsboro Hops Fund (non-profit arm).
- Support HR functions by maintaining personnel files and liaising with external HR partners.
- Perform general administrative and office management duties, as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or finance, including leadership roles
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Proficiency in QuickBooks (or comparable accounting software) and Microsoft Excel
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Willingness to work extended hours during peak periods, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays
Preferred:
- Experience in sports, entertainment, or nonprofit sectors
- Familiarity with revenue recognition across multiple business units
- Knowledge of budgeting for capital projects or new facility development
