Primary Objective: Support and assist the Vice President, Amateur Forecasting & Player Evaluation Initiatives in all facets of player evaluation. Identify, scout, rank and gather objective information on talent in assigned region. Provide player evaluations to support Marlins’ decision-making and forecasting at all amateur levels. This role will be a remote position based in either Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas or Louisiana.
Essential Functions:
- Evaluate, create written reports, make probabilistic player predictions, and present on all players in the assigned region.
- Maintain and update a comprehensive “Preference List” for the assigned region.
- Gather objective athletic, hitting, pitching and defensive testing information on players in assigned region.
- Provide and present all relevant background information (interviews, character assessments, test applications, etc.) on prospects in the assigned region.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Marlins’ scouting and player forecasting practices and apply them at all levels.
- File schedules for all assigned schools/programs in the region. Provide guidance and recommendation for incoming crosscheckers and other members of the scouting department.
- Provide prospect “follow reports” on prospects for upcoming draft classes.
- Special assignment coverages as assigned by department leadership.
- Aid Pro and International Scouting departments when assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Scouting of amateur players both in-person and on video.
- Strong probabilistic thinking skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to converse with both Players and Coaches/Agents, as well as the scouting department leadership group.
- Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills.
- Strong grasp of modern performance metrics.
- Acts in a manner that is fair & ethical, and represents the Miami Marlins with integrity.
- Takes personal responsibility for completing work in a way that positively and professionally represents the organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess computer proficiency with email, MS Word and Excel
- The ability to be innovative and proactive in promoting new ideas and concepts
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Equivalent, relevant work experience would be considered in lieu of formal education.
Physical Activities and Working Conditions:
- Travel and evaluate all assigned coverages and players-of-interest.
- Attend Regional Scouting meeting in advance of the annual Draft. Provide detailed presentation of each prospect in the assigned area.
- Regularly collaborate with scouting leadership in developing self-improvement plans in all areas, including goal planning and reviews.
- Must live within assigned region.
