Position Outline
The Bullpen Catcher serves a vital dual role within the coaching staff, combining on-field preparation with player development support. This position centers on two primary areas: 
  1. Catching Development & Scouting – Assisting coaches in executing daily player routines, implementing development plans, preparing scouting reports on opponents, and applying analytical and scouting insights to enhance game planning. 
  2. Practice & Game Support – Contributing across multiple skill areas during daily practices, receiving bullpens, managing pre-game preparation, and ensuring pitchers are physically and mentally ready to compete. 
 
Position Summary
As a Bullpen Catcher, you will be responsible for supporting coaches and players by applying organizational philosophies and leveraging data and scouting insights. This role requires adaptability, a strong understanding of catching, and a team-first mentality. Success in this position depends on clear communication, alignment with organizational goals, and the ability to build strong working relationships across the clubhouse. 

Essential Functions 
  • Spend full season with the Major League team, assisting coaching staff with catching bullpens and any other duties designated by the ML staff and Catching Director. 
  • Prepare pitchers/catchers as directed. 
  • Catch play with players. 
  • Collaborate with Pitching staff and the Major League Catching Coach to align schedule and goals of bullpen practice with pitcher/catcher development. 
  • Assist coaches and support staff with equipment setup and takedown. 
  • Communicate effectively with coaching staff and players to ensure alignment with team goals and strategies.  
  • Contribute insights on opponent tendencies to advanced scouting process. 
  • Support gameday requirements. 
  • Advocate for player development initiatives. 
  • Demonstrate intellectual curiosity and openness to new ideas that aid player development.

Skill Requirements  
  • Demonstrate excellent receiving skills with the ability to catch varied pitches and stamina to catch multiple bullpen sessions on a daily basis 
  • Attend and participate in all Major League Spring Training and designated offseason camps/workouts.  
  • Be able to play catch with multiple players daily 
  • Machine setup and takedown 
  • Understanding of coaching catching techniques 
  • Understanding of pitcher routines and tendencies 
 
Education & Experience Guidelines  
  • Strong communication/interpersonal skills and positive, team-first attitude. 
  • High-level or professional catching experience within the last two years. 
  • Familiarity with pitch metrics, data analysis, advance scouting and player development reporting.  
  • Familiarity with baseball tech – setup and usage.  
  • Technical understanding of Microsoft Office. 
  • Basic video editing skills preferred. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred. 
 
Work Environment  
  • Ability to work long hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays during the baseball season and development camps. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly (e.g., equipment, training aids, machines) 
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout season for team travel and off-season player development and performance support
