Job Title: Applied Biomechanics Fellow
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Performance Science, the Applied Biomechanics Fellow will help integrate applied sports biomechanics across all Baseball Operations departments, supporting key performance science initiatives and processes. Success in this applied role will require a foundational understanding of human movement and baseball performance coupled with the ability to communicate these concepts effectively across diverse stakeholders to make a positive impact on on-field performance and development. This fellowship opportunity is hybrid.
Position Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
· Contribute to the development, implementation, and maintenance of biomechanical tools and processes to assess, monitor, and optimize player performance and health
· Assist in integrating biomechanical insights into pro and amateur evaluations, and collaborate alongside staff to interpret biomechanical assessments to support player development initiatives
· Make impactful contributions to Performance Science and R&D research agendas
· Aid with the creation of learning and development materials for staff in biomechanics, motor learning, and related areas
Position Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in movement or biomedical sciences; current or completed postgraduate degree/training in related field strongly preferred
· Highly skilled in the implementation of motion capture technology, including markered/markerless 3D motion capture, IMUs, and complimentary systems like force plates and ball tracking
· Foundational understanding of the kinematics and kinetics underpinning pitching and hitting performance
· Proficiency in applied health and performance science research methods and statistics
· Strong organizational skills, intellectual curiosity, stress tolerance, the ability to handle uncertainty, and adept at driving projects to completion
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Spanish competency is an asset
Preferred Qualifications:
- Applied biomechanics experience in a competitive sport environment, including familiarity with baseball
· Proficiency in computer programming languages and tools (R, SQL, GitHub, etc.)
· Experience utilizing baseball technology such as HawkEye, Kinetrax, and Trackman
- Relevant certification/licensure as a sports performance practitioner (CPSS, CSCS, etc.)
Physical Requirements:
· This position will be based out of the Royals’ complex in Surprise, AZ, and offers flexibility for remote work
· Ability to lift items weighing as much as 40 pounds
· Must be able to work in a seated position for extended periods of time
· Must be able to be productive utilizing a computer keyboard and telephone
· Must be able to be productive in a work environment where the noise level can be high at times
· Must be comfortable walking to navigate the facility to access the office, concourse, etc.
· Must be able to work extended hours and/or weekends/holidays as required by deadlines and event scheduling
This position is a part-time role, with duties both remotely and in-person.
