Job Title: Team Nutritionist
Department: Player Development
Reports To: Head of Player Development/Assistant GM
Status: Full Time Employment
The Houston Astros are currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to fulfil the teams performance and health based nutritional needs. Residing in Houston, this role will work predominantly with the MLB team, with additional responsibilities to meet the needs of support to the wider 40man squad of players, who will be situated in other affiliates, as necessary. This role will suit an up and coming practitioner with a passion for both dietician practices and sports nutrition performance impact, who is motivated to integrate as part of the wider performance team daily.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of athletes
  • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training and achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with optimal health and optimal performance
  • Educate players in food selection choices and food preparation skills
  • Oversee nutrition and supplement budget for the MLB team
  • Evaluate nutritional supplements for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy as well as within MLB compliance; monitors use of appropriate supplementation in partnership with Strength and Conditioning staff
  • Collaborate on research projects aimed at assessing nutritional interventions impact on performance
  • Planning and reviewing all menus for both home and road games. This will require working with a Chef for home menus, and full catering management for road games. This will therefore require remote management of these road catering needs, when not present in the destination city, resulting in communication with clubhouse and restaurant personnel to confirm menus and any individualized dietary needs.
  • When not travelling on the road, this will require travel to and contact with 40man players in other affiliates, where needed and appropriate.
  • Presence at Spring Training to manage menus, road game nutrition/catering, education and sports science orientated work.
  • Travel to other affiliates as required for targeted support to players, performance staff, and club/kitchen staff.
  • At home, be a fully integrated member of the performance coaching staff, meaning presence at all home training sessions and games is vital to maximize collaboration with staff, and interaction with players.
  • Manage the dissemination of relevant communication from MLB regarding supplement and anti-doping updates to all staff and players
  • Off season duties such as shipping of supplements to the needs of 40man players, in addition to targeted travel and support for high priority players if required.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) certification.
  • CSSD certification preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience in a team sports environment preferable.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish useful but not required.

  • Ability to vary and adapt communication styles to meet the needs of the individual or groups they are working with
  • Awareness of how to handle difficult conversations
  • Ability to drive buy in to processes and systems with staff and players
  • Extremely organized, with ability to manage budgets and purchasing from various vendors
  • Motivation to work long in season hours
  • Proficiency with data management software such as excel

Physical Needs and Typical Working Conditions:
  • Must have enough schedule flexibility to meet the needs of the baseball calendar.
  • Must be willing to travel frequently as needed. 

Work Environment
This job operates in an office, locker room and often an outside setting. This role will involve being on the individual’s feet for long periods of time

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role routinely will be in an inside or outside type of environment for long periods of time.  This role will require the individual to be physically moving for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to lift and carry up to 25 pounds throughout the day.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Required travel between our Major League club (Houston, TX) and affiliates as per needs to reach 40-man players, and/or other specific needs for the organization, such as rehab assignments or specific cases
