Summary

The Houston Astros seek a Minor League Coach in the Player Development Department. This individual will serve as a uniformed coach and aid in the implementation of player development initiatives in the Dominican Republic. This position could lead to other positions within the organization in the future.

 

Essential Duties / Responsibilities

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The Minor League Coach, Dominican Academy will be expected to:

  • Support defense/baserunning initiatives and help lead on-field instruction at the Dominican Academy.
  • Assist academy hitting coaches with daily on-field and off-field daily tasks/instruction.
  • Support academy position players in game preparation that include, but are not limited to, early work and game review sessions.
  • Assist the field staff with conventional responsibilities of a 4th coach, such as throwing batting practice, hitting fungoes, and coaching first base.
  • Assist staff and players with the implementation of systems and technologies.
  • Aid in physical and mental preparation of minor league players assigned to the Dominican Academy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Possible Program Dates (Dates are Subject to Change):

  • January Camp: January 21st through March 5th
  • March Camp: March 10th through April 3rd
  • Dominican Summer League Pre-Season: April 14th through May 31st
  • Dominican Summer League: June 5th through August 22nd (mid-season All-Star Break)
  • Dominican Instructional League: October 2nd through November 1st

 

 

Qualifications

  • Coaching experience.
  • Ability to understand and advocate for changes due to new information and or tools in baseball.
  • Interest in strength & conditioning and analytics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Professional or collegiate playing experience is a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish is not required but strongly preferred. If not proficient, willingness to work towards proficiency is required.
  • Strength & Conditioning related degree is a plus.

 

 

Work Environment

This job operates both outside in a baseball field and office setting. This role will involve being in the heat and on the individual’s feet for long periods of time. At times the noise could become excessive. 

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role routinely will be in an inside or outside type of environment for long periods of time, of which includes bending, throwing, and swinging a bat.  This role will require the individual to be physically moving for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to lift and carry up to 25 pounds throughout the day. The individual must be able to visual acuity to distinguish pitches and facilitate instruction.

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

 

Travel

Travel may be expected in this role.
