The Houston Astros are excited to be hiring a Minor League Baseball Dietitian Apprentice to join the Sports Medicine & Performance department (SM&P) at one of our minor league affiliate locations including: Sugar Land, TX; Corpus Christi, TX; Asheville, NC; Fayetteville, NC; West Palm Beach, FL.

The Minor League Baseball Dietitian Apprentice will be responsible for managing and helping to execute all aspects related to nutrition performance for their respective club with oversight from the Head Dietitian.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Education and programming:
  • Act as a reliable source of nutrition for athletes and staff, ensuring all content provided is evidence-based/informed in the areas of medical nutrition therapy and performance
  • Conduct initial nutrition intake and nutrition-for-injury assessments, nutrition care plan maintenance, and general education sessions for athletes, both in-person and virtually, while following the Houston Astros nutrition curriculum to push key messages.
  • Consistently communicate with performance staff regarding athletes of concern.
  • Catering:
  • Coordinate the development of game-day menus.
  • Coordinate catering for all games with assistance from clubhouse staff.
  • Overseeing snack and beverage procurement.
  • Abide by nutrition and quality guidelines aimed at maximizing performance.
  • Promote proper food safety and sanitation procedures.



  • Oversee the NSF Certified for Sport supplement program, including budgeting and ordering.
  • Educate athletes and performance staff on the supplements, including their health and/or performance-promoting functions, dosing, and timing, plus supplement safety and risk considerations.


Sport Science:

  • If available, utilize data from hydration and sweat testing to fine-tune athlete hydration and recovery plans.
  • If available, utilize data from body weight and/or DEXA to evaluate and provide appropriate body composition and weight goals, track progress, and to best guide injury management.


Education and/or Experience and Skills:

  • Required:
    • Registered Dietitian (RD) credential
    • Texas state licensure, or required upon hire
    • Collegiate and/or professional experience
  • Preferred:
    • Fluent in Spanish
    • ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification


Work Environment

This job operates in an office, locker room and sometimes outside setting. This role will involve being on the individual’s feet for long periods of time


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This role routinely will be in an inside or outside type of environment for long periods of time.  This role will require the individual to be physically moving for long periods of time. This role will require the individual to lift and carry up to 25 pounds throughout the day.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.



Limited travel is required in this role.
