The Houston Astros are excited to be hiring a Head Strength & Conditioning Coordinator to join the Sports Medicine & Performance department (SM&P).  This person will lead the Astros’ Strength & Conditioning function and will be a key part of the Leadership Team for SM&P.The Head Strength & Conditioning Coordinator is responsible for leading the Houston Astros Strength & Conditioning initiatives in an evidence-based manner for all teams in the organization. Working collaboratively with multiple internal stakeholders, this person will play a primary role in shaping the Astros Strength & Conditioning philosophy and identify key programming principles.
Duties: 
  • Responsible for the vision and strategic direction of the Strength and Conditioning Department
  • Work collaboratively with our Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Sport Science and Player Development departments to help design our Strength & Conditioning philosophy and implementation strategy.
  • Coordinate the Astros’ Strength & Conditioning Department to ensure our Strength & Conditioning principles are deployed throughout the organization.
  • Develop the Astros Strength and Conditioning culture and ensure it is aligned with the overall organizational culture.
  • Deliver Strength and Conditioning Training for a variety of Houston Astros Players.
  • Work closely with our Sport Science Department to help design, align and implement data collection strategies. Ensure this information is used for goal setting and to objectively evaluate individual and team strength and conditioning results.
  • Collaborate with Player Development staff to ensure successful on field data collection and player evaluation initiatives.
  • Provide mentorship, education and development opportunities for our Strength & Conditioning coaches, baseball coaches and other members of the organization.
  • Work closely with Sports Medicine, Sport Science and R+D staff to ensure a collaborative and integrated approach to injury reduction and return to competition protocols.
  • Travel to our MLB and MiLB locations for quality assurance and provide onsite assistance for coaches and players.
  • Identify opportunities in areas such as Nutrition, Sleep, Recovery and pre/post game preparation and work collaboratively with SM&P members to execute new initiatives.
  • Partner with Team Dietician and Strength Coaches to execute Astros nutrition program.

Qualifications: 
  • 8+ years’ experience as a Strength Coach working with professional teams and/or college athletes. 
  • Demonstrated success leading teams in professional or college athletics
  • Current applicable certifications from the NSCA (CSCS, RSCC; or ability to obtain it within 4 months). International equivalents are welcome.
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree; Master’s Degree in Strength & Conditioning preferred, but not mandatory
  • Excellent competency in physical testing and dissemination of information and results for athletes 
  • Open minded person with proven problem-solving, strategic thinking and communication skills
  • Familiarity with performance technologies and their applications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred, but not mandatory
