Reports to: Manager, Player Education and Life Skills

 

Summary/Objective:

The Houston Astros are currently seeking a full-time ESL Teacher, located at our training complex in Guerra, Dominican Republic. This candidate will operate under the direction of the Manager, Player Education & Life Skills. Candidates shall be responsible for working with a small group of Houston Astros minor league baseball players on their English and life skills, as well as assisting players as they complete their formal education.

 

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Serve as ESL teacher for players residing at the complex, leading small-group English classes approximately four to five times a week.
  • Assist in the development of players’ life skills through a combination of in-class lessons and practical application.
  • Engage and instruct players of varying educational levels.
  • Plan and submit lesson plans on a weekly basis.
  • Assist with tutoring for players enrolled in virtual high school programs.
  • Use research-based strategies for second language acquisition and effective, positive classroom management strategies.
  • Maintain an organized, inviting, and functional classroom space.
  • Submit student evaluations to Manager, Player Education and Life Skills as requested.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and report concerns to Manager, Player Education and Life Skills.
  • Consistently communicate and collaborate with Manager, Player Education and Life Skills.
  • Coordinate with other teachers located at the complex to complete other duties as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • The candidate must be based in Guerra, Dominican Republic or within 50 miles.
  • The candidate must be available to work full-time hours and administer classes in the late afternoon/early evening.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is required.
  • Minimum two years of teaching, tutoring, lesson planning, or related field.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, development, or related field.
  • Certification in teaching & ESL is a plus.
  • Experience working with athletes and knowledge of baseball preferred.

 

Work Environment

This job operates in an office setting.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment, as well as computers, televisions, photo copiers, and student laptops.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision. 

 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Specific work schedule will vary slightly based on needs of complex; however, a typical workday can be anticipated to be 12 pm-7 pm Monday-Saturday.

 

Other Duties

Other duties will be determined in conjunction with other teachers at complex location or as requested by supervisor.
