Data Engineer 
Department:                      Information Technology 
Supervisor:                         Director, Applications and Data, Information Technology
Classification:                   Full-time (Exempt)

The Houston Astros are seeking a Data Engineer to join the business applications group.  The engineer will work closely with business and IT stakeholders to define and build the data pipelines that will enable faster, better, data-informed decision-making. The data engineer will help develop data integration strategies and execute specific data analysis, modeling and integration projects, and will oversee the overall data health of the organization.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for unleashing the potential inherent in an organization’s data and will be driven to discover, drive, and unlock insight through the usage of data integration tools. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Help develop and execute the data integration strategy for the organization
  • Build data integrations between systems and data environments
  • Develop and populate data warehousing models for reporting based on business needs
  • Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Maintain and monitor data integrations as changes occur in upstream and downstream systems, or as business needs dictate
  • Provide daily support on production data integrations
  • Provide support for underlying business application databases (SQL and Oracle) as needed
  • Triage incidents, determining root causes, and executing on plans to eliminate future issues

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or equivalent experience
  • 1-5 years of experience utilizing ETL toolsets (Informatica, SSIS, Boomi, etc.) to develop integrations across a broad set of underlying systems and data types
  • Experience supporting data warehouses
  • Experiencing writing SQL and supporting SQL Server and Oracle databases
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal, formal and informal) and proven track record in collaborating with internal and external stakeholders

  • Experience with iPaaS solutions (e.g., Informatica Cloud)
  • Experience with Azure environment/toolsets (e.g., blob storage, SQL DW)
  • Experience executing an ELT model for cloud data warehousing
  • Familiarity with utilizing data from REST APIs and Amazon S3 
  • Experience with visualization toolsets (e.g., PowerBI, Spotfire, Tableau)
  • Demonstrated experience as a DBA a plus

Work Environment
This job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a largely sedentary role. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision.  
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Rare travel may be expected in this role.
