The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have established themselves as one of the most recognizable brands in Minor League Baseball since their inaugural season in 2010. The Flying Squirrels consistently rank among the top-drawing teams in MiLB having led all 30 Double-A teams in total and average attendance each of the past four seasons.

JOB SUMMARY
The Richmond Flying Squirrels are seeking a Staff Accountant to support the organization’s day-to-day financial operations and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. This role is responsible for maintaining the General Ledger, performing account reconciliations, managing accounts payable and receivable activities, and supporting payroll and tax compliance. The Staff Accountant plays a key role in month-end and year-end close processes, audit preparation, and financial reporting, working closely with the Vice President of Finance to support sound financial operations across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Record and maintain daily financial transactions and the General Ledger in accordance with GAAP and internal controls.
  • Prepare and perform monthly bank, credit card, and balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy and financial integrity.
  • Process and manage accounts payable and receivable activities, including vendor invoices, employee expense reports (petty cash and travel), collections support, and aging reports.
  • Assist with the preparation and filing of local and state tax requirements, including Sales & Use tax returns and business license filings.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes by preparing adjusting journal entries and assisting the Vice President of Finance with financial reporting.
  • Compile and provide schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Review and reconcile payroll reports and payroll-related expenditures to ensure accurate General Ledger coding and departmental allocation.
  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation, ensuring compliance with record retention requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external vendors to resolve accounting-related issues, clarify discrepancies, and support smooth financial operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 3+ years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in a fast-paced or multi-entity environment.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting principles.
  • Experience with month-end close processes, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
  • Hands-on experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and expense reimbursement processes.
  • Experience supporting audits and preparing financial documentation.
  • Exposure to payroll processing or payroll reconciliations preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential financial information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, communicate verbally, and hear. The role involves frequent use of hands and fingers for computer work, including typing and operating standard office equipment, and requires sustained visual focus.

The employee may occasionally be required to lift, carry, push, or pull light materials such as files or office supplies. This position primarily involves light physical activity in an office or administrative environment, with minimal physical exertion. Occasional exposure to elevated noise levels or varying environmental conditions may occur in event or venue settings.
