ABOUT THE COMPANY:
The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A Eastern League affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, have established themselves as one of the most recognizable brands in Minor League Baseball since their inaugural season in 2010. Guided by three pillars – be different, be impactful and have FUNN – the organization has ingrained itself in Central Virginia, annually reaching more than 10,000 students through the club's education programs while making 400-plus community appearances. Additionally, the team has renovated multiple youth baseball and softball fields across the city and awarded numerous scholarships through its 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Flying Squirrels Charities. The Flying Squirrels consistently rank among the top-drawing teams in MiLB having led all 30 Double-A teams in total and average attendance each of the past three seasons.
 
JOB SUMMARY:                
The Richmond Flying Squirrels are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Director of Finance to lead and manage the organization’s financial operations. This position is responsible for overseeing all accounting functions, monthly financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and compliance. The Director of Finance will collaborate closely with senior leadership to maintain the financial integrity and operational efficiency of all revenue-generating departments. This is a hands-on role requiring strong accounting expertise, organization, and the ability to work independently in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  
·        Review, reconcile, and report all revenue streams, including ticketing, concessions, sponsorships, and merchandise.
·        Review, reconcile, and record all expense categories, including game day operations, travel, stadium, office, and tax-related costs.
·        Ensure accurate tracking and accounting of capital expenditures.
·        Lead month-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations.
·        Evaluate and improve existing financial policies, procedures, and workflows to increase efficiency and support organizational goals.
·        Prepare monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and analyze budget variances.
·        Ensure general ledger activity is accurate, complete, and compliant with accounting standards and organizational policies.
·        Oversee all A/R functions, including sponsorship invoicing, cash receipts, commission tracking, and deferred revenue.
·        Manage A/P processes, including invoice approvals, payments, and expense reimbursements.
·        Prepare and maintain sales commission reports.
·        Maintain short- and long-term cash flow forecasts based on operational needs.
·        Ensure adherence to GAAP, internal controls, and MiLB financial reporting requirements.
·        Lead the development of annual budgets and periodic reforecasts, while actively monitoring financial performance and conducting variance analyses to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
·        Support annual audits and tax filings with accurate documentation and schedules.
·        Help establish and maintain financial policies and procedures.
·        Manage general office functions such as banking, mail, and supply ordering.
·        Provide financial insights for special projects and event profitability analysis.
·        Oversee financial reporting and profit recognition for non-game day events.

QUALIFICATIONS:  
·        Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred. 
·        Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management.
·        Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
·        Experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
·        Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
·        Proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills.
·        High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
·        Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
·        Experience with external auditors and tax professionals preferred.
