JOB DESCRIPTION
The Major League Physical Performance Coach plays a critical role in optimizing player availability, durability, and performance in one of the most demanding environments in professional sports—high altitude baseball. This position is responsible for delivering and evolving the Colorado Rockies’ Physical Performance program at the Major League level, with a strong emphasis on strength & conditioning, recovery, nutrition, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In addition to hands-on coaching, this role serves as a leader within the broader performance ecosystem, providing guidance to Minor League performance staff and helping oversee nutrition strategy in partnership with FLIK, the Club’s Major League culinary provider. The ideal candidate is a high-energy, detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, relationship-driven environment and is passionate about helping athletes perform at their best, day in and day out.
This position will be based in Scottsdale, AZ, during Spring Training and Denver, CO, during the regular season, with travel required throughout the season.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Physical Performance & Training
- Lead and/or assist with daily team warm-ups, mobility and flexibility sessions, speed, agility, and sport-specific movement work.
- Design and lead individualized and group-based strength and power training sessions aligned with player needs, workload, and game demands.
- Monitor and adjust training programs to account for altitude, travel, recovery, and seasonal fatigue.
- Educate players on training intent, recovery strategies, sleep habits, and long-term performance sustainability.
- Communicate regularly with players during the off-season regarding training plans, nutrition strategies, and recovery expectations.
Nutrition Leadership & Vendor Partnership
- Serve as a key leader of the Major League nutrition program, ensuring alignment between performance goals, player needs, and fueling strategies.
- Partner closely with FLIK to plan, evaluate, and continuously improve pre-game, post-game, and daily clubhouse meals.
- Provide education and accountability around nutritional best practices, hydration, supplementation (in compliance with MLB policy), and altitude-specific fueling considerations.
Collaboration & Sports Medicine Integration
- Work collaboratively with the Major League Manager, Coaches, Athletic Trainers, and Medical Staff to support player readiness and availability.
- Assist Athletic Trainers with rehabilitation and return-to-play programming as appropriate.
- Participate as a strong contributor in in-season and off-season planning meetings.
- Assist with performance testing protocols and data collection in collaboration with Major League Staff and the Minor League Coordinator.
Leadership & Program Development
- Lead, mentor, and support Minor League strength and conditioning staff, helping ensure organizational alignment and professional development.
- Demonstrate full proficiency in the Colorado Rockies’ performance software systems, including data entry, analysis, and reporting.
- Understand, communicate, and strictly enforce MLB policies related to supplements and performance practices.
- Maintain the organization, cleanliness, and professional standards of the Training Center.
Operational Excellence
- Manage competing priorities in a demanding, travel-heavy Major League environment.
- Maintain a professional image and demeanor that reflects the standards of a Major League organization.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of Baseball Operations and Medical Operations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or a related field.
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
- Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) through the NSCA.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Demonstrated experience implementing strength, conditioning, and recovery programs in a high-performance athletic environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and credibility with players, coaches, and staff.
- Exceptional organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Exercise Science or a related field.
- Minimum of four (5) years of strength and conditioning experience at the professional baseball level.
- Experience with Hawkin Dynamics force plates and software.
- Baseball playing or coaching background.
- Fluency in English and Spanish.
- Experience working collaboratively with nutrition partners or managing performance-related vendors.
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) certification, with eligibility to meet MLB CBA requirements for a Major League Dietitian, and experience integrating nutrition strategy into high-performance environments, including travel-heavy and altitude-based competition.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position requires a high level of flexibility and availability consistent with the demands of a Major League Baseball season, including extended hours, travel, and non-traditional schedules, within a dynamic, performance-driven environment where schedules are fluid, and flexibility is essential to supporting player health, readiness, and competitive success. Consistent, punctual, and reliable attendance is a key requirement of this role.
- Spring Training (Scottsdale, AZ): Monday through Sunday, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Schedule includes daily on-site work, games, and frequent road or day trips to nearby Spring Training facilities.
- Major League Regular Season (Denver, CO & Travel): Monday through Sunday, including home games, road trips, holidays, evenings, and weekends. Extensive travel with the Major League team is required throughout the season, including overnight and multi-city road trips. The game schedule and team needs dictate work hours and may vary significantly week to week.
- Off-Season: Generally Monday through Friday; however, evening and weekend availability is required as needed to support player programming, planning meetings, training oversight, and organizational initiatives.
PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 100
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, and demonstrate exercises for extended periods.
- Ability to work long hours in both indoor and outdoor training environments.
- Ability to travel frequently and adapt to varying schedules and time zones.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of a highly active, hands-on role that includes lifting, moving equipment, and long hours on feet.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively during the season.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Annual Salary: $100,000 to $115,000, meal money, travel reimbursement, and spring training living stipend included
- This full-time position is eligible for the Club’s benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with employer match, paid time off, game tickets, employee discounts, and other benefits according to plan eligibility.
