Job Summary: The Applied Sports Science Fellow is to work as a part of the Health and Performance staff to contribute to Applied Sports Science initiatives at the Reds Player Development Complex that aid in the development and optimization of player health and performance. Sports Science, as defined in this instance, is the application of scientific methods and principles to improve player development, health, and performance.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Education
    • Enrolled in or completed an undergraduate degree program in sport or exercise science, kinesiology, or related field.
  • Experience
    • > 1 year of experience working in sports environments with athletes.
  • Skills
    • Creativity, critical thinking, and strong analytical skills to interpret and apply complex information effectively.
    • Ability to exercise independent judgment and efficiently plan, prioritize, and manage a dynamic workload.
    • Strong work ethic, organizational skills, and attention to detail.Proficiency using sport technology (e.g., GPS, force plates, dynamometry, timing gates, accelerometer/IMU/LPT, wearables, etc.).
    • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, displaying ability to convey information effectively through visual, written, digital, and verbal form to diverse stakeholders across Baseball Operations.
    • Competence in various software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

    • Spoken and written fluency in English
    • Willing to relocate. This position is based in Goodyear, AZ, at the Reds Player Development Complex
    • Willing to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
Desired Requirements:
  • Education
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate degree program in sport or exercise science, kinesiology, or related field highly desired.
  • Experience
    • Applied sports science experience in collegiate or professional sport.CSCS and/or CPSS a plus.
  • Skills
    • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement applied sport science research/projects highly desired.
    • Demonstrated proficiency conducting data management, analysis, or visualization using R/Python highly desired.
  • Other
    • Spanish language ability a plus.
    • Ability to travel within the United States and internationally.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Data Collection & Analysis - 35% 
    • Administer athlete monitoring program and other planned and ad hoc testing at the Reds Player Development Complex, ensuring strict adherence to test protocols and standards.
    • Provide analysis and insights from athlete monitoring program and other testing data to support individualized player plans and return-to-play processes.
    • Assist Applied Sports Science Department with managing player health and performance data, including tasks such as data entry, cleaning, analysis, and preparing written and visual reports.
  • Equipment Management - 10%
    • Ensure proper set-up and breakdown of sport science equipment (e.g., force plates, dynamometers, GPS) for data collection and assessments.
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and manage the inventory of sport science equipment.
  • Research & Information Gathering - 35%
    • Contribute to research projects and other Applied Sports Science initiatives, adapting to team needs and organizational priorities.
    • Conduct approved independent research projects to generate new insights and applications from available testing and other data.
    • Perform literature and research reviews on topics pertinent to Health & Performance and Player Development initiatives, staying informed on cutting-edge research, technology, and methods in sports science to continuously improve processes and protocols.
    • Evaluate the validity, reliability, and feasibility of current and emerging technologies and testing protocols, and support onboarding of adopted technologies as needed.
  • Project Management & Administration - 5%
    • Ensure ethical management of player performance data, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with organization and legal standards.
  • Other - 5%
    • Other duties as assigned.
