Position Summary
The Seasonal Performance Dietitian will serve as an integral member of the performance nutrition team, supporting the health and performance of minor league players at Camelback Ranch in Arizona under the direction of the Performance Nutrition Coordinator. They will be an onsite presence for nutrition initiatives during Spring Training, the Arizona Complex League (ACL), instructional camps, and all additional camps and leagues operating at the complex. This role is responsible for delivering evidence-based nutrition support through team education, individualized athlete counseling, body composition assessment, hydration and sweat testing, and comprehensive coordination of all meals and snacks. The position requires daily on-site presence and close collaboration with culinary, medical, strength & conditioning, and mental performance.
Primary Responsibilities
Athlete Education & Consulting
- Conduct individualized nutrition assessments, counsel athletes, and create nutrition care plans for players to support performance, energy balance, recovery, and body composition goals.
- Implement fueling, hydration, and supplementation strategies for training, competition, recovery, injury prevention, and rehabilitation based on department protocols.
· Educate, evaluate, monitor, and advise athletes on dietary supplements, including their health and/or performance-promoting functions, dosing, and timing, supplement safety and risk considerations and compliance with MLB policies.
- Create and deliver team-based nutrition education sessions aligned with organizational performance goals.
- Communicate nutrition information in clear, culturally appropriate language to promote understanding and compliance.
- Utilize designated performance nutrition and athlete management systems for appropriate recommendations, documentation, and communication.
Body Composition & Hydration Assessment
· Conduct body composition assessments, interpret data, and provide recommendations in alignment with optimal athletic performance and health.
- Perform sweat testing and hydration assessments to inform individual fluid and electrolyte strategies.
- Track, document, and communicate results with relevant performance and medical staff.
Food & Fuel Operations
- Coordinate with clubhouse and culinary staff on daily meals, snacks, and hydration options for all teams and camps at the complex.
- Collaborate with culinary staff on building menus and meals to maintain quality, consistency, and performance alignment.
- Ensure meals and snacks meet timing, macronutrient, and micronutrient needs of athletes.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with strength & conditioning, athletic training, medical, mental performance, and coaching staff.
- Communicate regularly with necessary staff regarding athlete care, referrals, and any player updates.
- Participate in performance meetings and interdisciplinary planning as needed.
- Assist with nutrition support for rehab and return-to-play athletes.
Administrative & Professional Responsibilities
- Attend all team activities such as practices, lifts/conditioning, games, meals, and other events.
- Maintain accurate documentation of consultations, assessments, and education delivered.
- Track supplement inventory and usage and coordinate ordering needs with Performance Nutrition Coordinator.
- Execute the organizational and nutrition department vision and mission to enhance player performance and well-being and uphold organizational standards.
· Ensure compliance with MLB supplement and functional food policies.
· Serve as a reliable source and subject-matter expert for nutrition for athletes and staff, ensuring all content provided is in alignment with evidence-based research.
- Sustain professional, ethical, and regulatory standards for sports dietetics.
- Maintain confidentiality of athlete health and performance data in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential
- Eligible for licensure or certified to practice in the state of Arizona.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field
- Experience working with athletes in a team or performance setting.
- Ability to work long hours, weekends, and holidays as required during the baseball season.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Nutrition, Exercise Science, or related field
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or working toward certification.
- Previous experience in professional or collegiate baseball
- Experience with body composition technologies and sweat testing methodologies.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Work Environment & Schedule
- Seasonal position from March 1 through September 30
- On-site presence required at the Arizona Complex
- Schedule includes early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on team needs.
