OVERVIEW
The Official Scorer ensures the accuracy and integrity of Major League Baseball (MLB) game records by making and distributing all scoring decisions in accordance with Rule 9 of the Official Baseball Rules (OBR). This role involves detailed tracking of every play, clear communication with media and club personnel, and timely submission of official reports to MLB’s statistician. This position plays a critical role in ensuring fair play and accurate historical records, requiring impartial judgment, and adherence to MLB standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Arrive prepared before first pitch, collecting rosters and all necessary pre-game materials.
  • Maintain a precise and complete scorecard, tracking every pitch, play, and scoring decision.
  • Make all required in-game announcements, including time of first pitch, fielding credits, winning/losing pitchers, and more.
  • Coordinate closely with the MLB Stringer throughout the game, ensuring timely communication on judgment calls and alignment on the official post-game report.
  • Communicate with MLB’s Official Scoring support staff via approved channels (e.g., Slack) when clarification or assistance is needed.
  • Ensure all scoring decisions strictly follow MLB’s Official Baseball Rules and uphold the integrity of the game.
  • Provide a post-game recap detailing scoring decisions and other application of Rule 9 of the MLB rulebook

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous baseball scorekeeping experience and extensive knowledge of the Official Baseball Rules.
  • Ability to use MLB-approved online tools and technology for scoring and communication.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to explain scoring rulings to club personnel when necessary.
  • Proven ability to apply sound judgment to plays requiring interpretation.
  • High attention to detail in scorekeeping, stat tracking, and verifying game totals.
  • Collaborative approach when working with MLB staff, fellow Official Scorers, and team personnel.
  • Professional demeanor and conduct, serving as a visible representative of MLB and the Cannon Ballers organization.
  • Previous experience in a press box environment or with a professional/collegiate sports team—preferably baseball—is strongly preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Official Scorers must be available for most Cannon Ballers home games, including nights, weekends, and select holidays. Scheduling will vary based on game and event needs.
