Position Summary

The Official Scorer is responsible for making and announcing all official scoring decisions during Charleston Professional Baseball Company home games in accordance with Rule 9 of the Official Baseball Rules. This position plays a critical role in the integrity of the game by maintaining accurate records, exercising sound judgment on scoring decisions, and serving as a resource for scoring rule interpretation to club personnel, media, and league officials. The Official Scorer works closely with Communications Director to submit the official game report to the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Arrive at the ballpark no later than 60 minutes prior to the scheduled game start time.
  • Collect team rosters and applicable pre-game information and be fully set up at the assigned press box location prior to first pitch.
  • Maintain a detailed and accurate scorecard, recording every pitch and play throughout the game.
  • Make all official scoring decisions involving judgment calls in accordance with the Official Baseball Rules.
  • Communicate scoring decisions, pitching changes, substitutions, first pitch timing, weather delays, and other game-related updates, media members, broadcasters, and press box personnel.
  • Utilize approved online tools and platforms to support scoring accuracy and communication.
  • Serve as a professional and knowledgeable point of contact for scoring rule clarification when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Charleston Professional Baseball Company.

  • Maintain professionalism and composure when receiving feedback or critique from clubs, players, media, or league personnel.
  • Ensure accuracy, attention to detail, and timeliness in all scoring records and reports.
  • Collaborate effectively with team staff, fellow Official Scorers, and press box colleagues.
  • Represent Charleston Professional Baseball Company in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Be dependable, punctual, and prepared for every assigned game.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
 
Qualification Requirements

  • Exceptional and demonstrable knowledge of the Official Baseball Rules, with particular emphasis on Rule 9.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately track individual and team statistics.
  • Ability to clearly and confidently communicate scoring decisions and rule interpretations.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills in live-game environments.
  • Professional demeanor with patience and openness to constructive feedback.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
  • Previous Official Scoring experience at the professional or amateur level is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience using online scoring tools and digital reporting systems preferred.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, live-event environment.
 
Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a press box environment during home games.
  • Regular use of computers and standard office and game-day technology.
  • Fast-paced setting with constant focus required throughout live games.
 
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee frequently uses hands to write, type, or operate equipment and may be required to reach with hands and arms.

Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time, seasonal position with hours tied directly to Charleston Professional Baseball Company home games. The role requires availability for nights, weekends, and holidays based on the game schedule.
