Reports to: Director, Baseball Research & Development
Location: Phoenix, Arizona 

The Arizona Diamondbacks Baseball Research and Development group is looking to connect with individuals that are interested in gaining experience in baseball analytics. In this role you will have opportunities to interact and learn from people across departments within the front office.

Position Summary:
Team Players with the Baseball Research & Development group will assist analysts and members of the front office with existing projects and processes. They will also have the opportunity to take on one or multiple projects that fit their existing skills and interests while providing value to the organization. The projects will likely involve predictive modeling, data visualization, app/dashboard development, or player valuation. 

Responsibilities:
  • Assist the R&D Group and Baseball Operations department with existing projects and processes.
  • Develop projects that provide value to the organization. 
  • Present projects and analyses to the greater baseball operations group through data visualization and text. 
  • Stay current with the latest publicly available baseball research.
  • Develop an understanding of new data sources.
  • Use a fresh perspective to recommend improvements to current R&D processes.
  • Perform ad-hoc research projects as requested.

Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in either R or Python.
  • Knowledge of database technologies including SQL.
  • Candidates with baseball research projects or applicable non-baseball research projects are strongly preferred.
  • Shiny or other dashboard/web development experience is preferred.
  • Excellent work ethic and attention to detail while balancing multiple responsibilities in fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical audiences using data visualization.
  • Knowledge of the recent developments in baseball research is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with a probabilistic programming language like Stan or PyMC is a plus.
  • Experience with computer vision is a plus.
