The Gary SouthShore RailCats are seeking current college students to be a part of the team’s 2026 season.  As a RailCats Grounds intern, you will get first-hand experience in the day-to-day operation of a professional baseball franchise. This is a seasonal internship position which requires college credit and will last the duration of the 2026 season only.


RailCats baseball is looking for Grounds Crew interns for the 2026 season. Interns will assist the Head Groundskeeper in the daily maintenance of the Steel Yard. As a Grounds Crew intern, you will be working on field closely with players and coach's making sure to give them the best playing surface. You will be a crucial part of the team's success.

What You’ll Do
  • Help maintain and repair the pitching mound, home plate, bullpens, and infield areas.
  • Assist with mowing, edging, aerating, and fertilizing to keep the field in top condition.
  • Participate in tarp pulls and field covers on both game days and non-game days.
  • Support irrigation maintenance, sodding, and turf repair projects.
  • Set up and tear down for batting practice and pre-game field prep.
  • Assist with field and facility needs for non-baseball events like concerts, high school and college tournaments, and community activities.

 
What We’re Looking For
  • Prior turf or grounds experience is a plus, but we’re happy to train the right candidate.
  • Strong work ethic and a willingness to take on physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
  • Experience operating utility vehicles and grounds equipment is helpful.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Undergraduate or graduate student attending accredited university
  • Must be able to earn college credit for internship - no exceptions
  • Must be able to commit to work the entire internship period from start to finish
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours, including nights, weekends and holidays as required
  • Passion for sports and strong desire to work in a team environment
Pay
  • This is a twice monthly stipend position
Availability
  • Internship may start as soon as May 1st and can run through first week of September
