Overview

Reporting to the General Manager of Theatre and Operations, the Chief Engineer will be responsible for overseeing all engineering and technical operations, including the maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems, while ensuring those systems function smoothly and safely at Hamilton Arena, FirstOntario Concert Hall and The Studio. 

 

This role pays an annual salary of $90,000 CAD - $120,000 CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair building equipment in a professional responsible manner.
  • Perform in-house repairs, when feasible.
  • Keep accurate maintenance, inspection and repair records
  • Inspects systems throughout facility to detect malfunction or breakdowns.
  • Investigates malfunctions or breakdown of systems to diagnose causes and locate the source of the problem.
  • Anticipates potential malfunctions or breakdowns and takes appropriate action to prevent or minimize the use of services.
  • Operates and maintains the refrigeration and heating systems of the facilities.
  • Assume management responsibility for all services and activities involved in the maintenance and operations of the HVAC, mechanical, chillers, refrigeration, boilers and associated equipment.
  • Perform ice rink preparation and maintenance while maintaining a high-quality ice sheet for hockey practices and games.
  • Oversee work performed by outside contractors on the building, its physical systems or its equipment.
  • Responsible for CMMS Program and work orders as well as the development and execution of a preventive maintenance program facility wide.
  • Follow the preventive maintenance program, energy management program and standard operations procedures for all machinery and equipment.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for facility maintenance and operations; meet with Operations staff and or 3rd party Contractors to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and administration of the Operations and Capital budgets; forecast of additional funds needed for equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments as necessary.
  • Assist with the set-up of events; coordinate facility arrangements with concessionaires and vendors; direct and monitor the work of contractors, engineers, and architects on building projects.
  • Maintain hazardous materials communication program, material safety data sheets and required records and permits; maintain knowledge of changes in pertinent Federal, Provincial and Local regulations.

 

Qualifications

  • “B” Class Operator Certificate as granted by the Ontario TSSA with specialized training in the building maintenance of HVAC or related building systems.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years experience in maintenance and repair of HVAC or related building systems, and knowledge of Ice refrigeration.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in ice installation and ice maintenance (ORFA Certified Ice Technician designation) is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a Sports and Entertainment Venue is preferred.
  • An understanding of supervisory principles associated with training casual staff as necessary.
  • Knowledge of Office, Ice Plant, CMMS and BAS software systems.
  • A demonstrated understanding of and the ability to maintain the building’s environmental & mechanical systems.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and extended number of consecutive days to maintain the building and its physical / climate control systems, including the Refrigeration Plant.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, TSSA and WSIB requirements.
  • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, refrigeration and ice making is required.
