Job Title:                     Controller

Reports To:                 Senior Vice President, Programming & Business Operations
Effective Date:             January 2020
 
I. SUMMARY 
The Controller will oversee and supervise all aspects of the accounting and finance function at Nassau Coliseum, ensuring compliance with company and department policies and procedures while adhering to strict financial timelines.
 
Responsibilities include preparation and oversight of financial statements, budgets, and all financial reporting. The incumbent will work closely with senior management of the arena and ASM Facilities, and will liaison directly with ownership on all financial matters. This is a high profile and very important position as a senior member of the management team for one of the premier arenas in the world.
 
The position requires a solid understanding of general accounting policies and procedures, the knowledge and ability to implement and monitor SOX 404 internal controls, and experience in preparing financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage ongoing accounting processes, including invoicing, payables, data entry, journal entry preparation, financial reporting, monthly and year-end closing.
  • Oversee annual budgets, cash flow forecasts, multi-year financial plans, and timely and accurate financial statements. Review monthly financial results and reporting requirements. Prepare event flash reports and other financial reports to help improve efficiencies and profitability.
  • Oversee the monthly close process which includes reviewing journal entries, invoicing and cash receipts to ensure the department is maintaining proper documentation.
  • Represent the arena in settlements with tenants and events by enforcing standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Provide guidance by developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures to ensure the department complies with SOX 404 Internal Control requirements. Provide direction and guidance as needed for both internal and external audits.
  • Review and analyze event license agreements, tenant, service, and vendor agreements.
  • Prepare and/or review monthly account analyses and reconciliations as required.
  • Prepare and analyze event pro-formas. Make recommendations regarding deal structures, manage cash position and prepare cash forecasting.
  • Primary liaison with Accounts Payable department to monitor, review and release outgoing checks/wires.
  • Maintain and update the department’s financial walk-throughs to ensure they represent current review procedures that are used as a basis for audit testing.
 
III. QUALIFICATIONS

A.    Education and/or Experience
  • A minimum education level of: BA/BS Degree (4-year)
  • Advanced Accounting degree preferred
  • A minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of managerial experience
  • CPA required
  • Cisco NetSuite experience a plus
 
B.    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Extensive experience with financial statement preparation.
  • Skill in personnel management, fiscal planning, budget preparation and administration, data collection and analysis, implementation of existing policies and procedures, and staff hiring and training.
  • Strong written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to present financial and operational information in a clear, concise manner to management and ownership.
  • Direct experience managing debt financing and capital project expenditures.
  • Experience drafting audited financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flows with all required footnotes).
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS Office Software, particularly Excel.
  • Proficient knowledge of accounting software systems.
  • Capable of handling all aspects of the accounting cycle and principles and technique of arena operations.
  • Ability to work under above-average pressure in meeting urgent deadlines.
  • Ability to work long, irregular hours and weekends as dictated by event schedules and project timetables.
  • Poise and confidence to command respect of peers and counterparts.
