POSITION SUMMARY
When you join Sounders FC you join a Family.  A giant, inclusive, soccer-loving Family rooted in the best soccer city in America. Here we average nearly 40,000 fans per match, recently attracting over 69,000 fans as we won the 2019 MLS Cup here in Seattle. Our club exists to create special moments like these, where we enrich lives and unify our fans and city through soccer.
 
Through both digital and live experiences, the Sounders FC Marketing department curates club, fan and cultural stories to build meaningful connections and serve as leaders invested the progress of our Seattle community. 
 
As part of the Marketing department, the Brand Creative team leads the Sounders FC brand expression across copywriting, design, photo and video disciplines to ensure premium and authentic fan experiences across all club touchpoints.
 
As the Creative Director you will lead the creative vision, strategy and storytelling approach for the Sounders FC brand with the goal of deepening relationships with existing fans, while also attracting new fans to the family. Across multiple mediums and platforms, you will lead and develop a creative team to ensure our unique SFC brand voice, look, feel and narrative is strong, clear and consistent.
 
Working closely with the Marketing Planning & Insights, Digital Brand Experience and Live Brand Experience teams, as well as across departments, is critical to bringing a cohesive brand expression to life across digital and live experiences, brand campaigns, editorial stories and cross-channel communications. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.  Other duties may be assigned.  
Creative Strategy and Direction
·         Inspire new ways of thinking and explore fresh and unique approaches to solve creative problems.
·         Lead the team to develop a story-led approach to SFC creative work.
·         Enhance and evolve brand visual, messaging and video designs while remaining true to the SFC brand.
·         Establish cohesive creative direction to deliver against fan retention and acquisition business initiatives. 
·         Translate business objectives into cohesive, cross-channel digital, physical and video creative executions.
·         Set quality and conformity standards for all creative deliverables.
·         Share brand guidelines to align the organization against creative brand standards.
·         Oversee the creative vision and process for in-studio and field marketing shoots.
 
Creative Project Management
·         Nurture a culture of creativity, innovation and continuous improvement across the organization.
·         Organize creative resources and priorities to successfully deliver on business objectives and timelines.
·         Define and oversee scope, concept, development and approval processes for all creative projects.
·         Lead creative brainstorming activities, internal reviews and other creative sessions.
·         Provide clear, actionable feedback to ensure creative brand intentions are consistently delivered.
·         Proactively estimate and communicate creative team resource needs and priorities. 
·         Engage and manage a trusted network of creative agency partners, freelancers and collaborators.
 
Collaboration
·         Lead with a solution-oriented creative approach to problem solving across teams and departments.
·         Collaborate with marketing leadership team to align on creative priorities and deliverables.
·         Collaborate to customize creative based on fan data and insights.
·         Communicate design and video concepts to various internal and external stakeholders.
·         Collaborate to develop fan-centric programs that drive revenue via corporate partnerships.
·         Participate in cross-functional seasonal brand strategy and planning sessions.
·         Participate in 1-3-year brand planning.
 
Team Leadership
·         Inspire passion and motivate engagement across all creative disciplines.
·         Serve as a Marketing leader, while directly managing at least six creative team members across design, copywriting and video disciplines.
·         Create a positive, safe working environment that sets the stage for open, collaborative teamwork.
·         Cultivate career development opportunities for the Creative team members.
·         Carry out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training team; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employee(s); addressing complaints and resolving problems.
·         Support the Sounders FC Mission to Create Moments, Enrich Lives and Unify Through Soccer, as well as the Sounders FC Values of Ambition, Innovation, and Collaboration in all interactions with teammates, partners, vendors, and fans.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skill and/or Ability
  • Thrives on earning hearts and minds of fans through creative brand storytelling.
  • Well organized with ability to manage multiple projects and creative workstreams simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail in planning and execution, while maintaining a big picture perspective.
  • Experience delivering new ideas for branding, advertising and marketing messaging. 
  • Able and willing to support design team execution as needed.
  • Excellent communicator and ability to work with multiple stakeholders and personalities.
  • Ability to lead strategic sessions to develop a creative vision, write content and generate storyboards.
  • Ability to rapidly iterate design concepts from initial briefing through final delivery.
  • Ability to lead a collaborative design process through visual comps and prototypes.
  • Seeks to understand and apply data and insights to drive effective digital marketing.
  • Stays relevant through continuous skill development and technical and trend-related knowledge.
  • Demonstrates a continuous drive to learn and grow, both professionally and as a leader.
  • A passion for innovation and technology and a solid understanding of digital tools and trends.
  • Understanding of photography and videography best practices.
  • Outstanding visual design skills in typography, composition, motion and systems design.
  • Broad working knowledge of soccer and familiarity with Major League Soccer preferred.
  • A passion for soccer and storytelling and for delivering high quality work.
 
Applicable Technical Skills
  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, Illustrator etc.)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or Apple Keynote
  • Project Management tools
  • Expert in communicating creative plans via Apple Keynote or Microsoft PowerPoint presentations

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, marketing, advertising, art direction or a related field.
  • 8+ years professional brand design experience with focus in sports or entertainment industries.
  • 3+ years professional experience as a Creative/Art Director of video/visual based marketing content.
  • Experience leading multi-discipline creative teams in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Experience driving integrated creative strategy in fast-paced environment. 
  • Expert knowledge of design process from conceptualization through production across mediums.
  • Experience in web design with layout for email, web and social media graphics.
  • Experience overseeing or creating motion graphics, specifically in Adobe After Effects or Photoshop.
  • Understanding of responsive web development and device limitations.
  • Experience with print design and production process.
 
Special remarks regarding work environment, if applicable
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed, including home matches.
  • This position functions primarily at the Sounders FC business office in Seattle, WA.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation.
