ABOUT THE ROLE
This position is based in Wayne, PA at YSC Sports Complex. The primary responsibility will be to assist the Philadelphia Union Performance Department with the Academy teams. There may be opportunities to attend and assist at Philadelphia Union 2 matches and practices.  
The Performance Fellow reports directly to the Philadelphia Union Director of Academy Performance. The fellow will work closely with performance coaches, athletic trainers, and sports scientists. They will gain valuable insight not only into the role and responsibilities of a performance professional, but also how to collaborate with those outside of the Performance Department, including technical staff, support staff, and doctors.  

The position will require regular attendance and hours according to the standards, which will be established by the Director of Academy Performance. Due to the nature of the sports industry, the fellow may be required to work varying schedules to accommodate the team’s evening, weekend, and holiday events. 
 
Primary duties assisting with Philadelphia Union Academy Performance Staff with the daily training sessions of the athletes:
  • Assist with the on-field and weight room coaching and preparation of athletes, including daily pre-training activation, lifts, and reconditioning sessions.
  • Assist with the collection, analysis, and presentation of GPS information.
  • Assist in the collection, analysis, and presentation of various data including assessments, wellness, and session information.
  • Assist in the necessary tasks for the preparation of lifts, training sessions, and matches.
  • May be required to travel at times.
  • Other tasks and assignments as necessary, such as administrative duties.
 
Goals for the Fellowship:
  • Learn how to be a valuable member of a multi-disciplinary team in a high-performance environment. 
  • Understand the daily work flow and the environment in a top elite soccer academy, while gaining valuable hands-on experience. 
  • Understand the role of sport science to help inform decisions in a professional soccer environment. Gain a holistic approach to physical preparation in team sport.
  • Gain knowledge of different training methodologies in soccer, and how to implement these ideas to aid in the planning and organization of the training process. 
  • Develop valuable communication skills, through dealing with athletes and sport coaches in the real team setting. 

Position Compensation and Timeline: 
This is not a full-time position and will be considered part-time within the organization. All required clothing and footwear will be provided. The hiring will be completed as soon as possible, and the position will last through June 2022. At the conclusion of the season, the Director of Academy Performance will evaluate the fellow to determine if both the individual and the organization would like to extend their role at the club.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have the aptitude and dedication to education, and an enthusiasm to learn and grow.  This opportunity is for young strength and conditioning coaches who wants to develop their skillset as it relates to physical preparation in sport. 
 
Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or a related field.
  • Shows interest in working toward one of the following: NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa).
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1+ years of work experience as a strength and conditioning coach.
  • Possesses one of the following: NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa).
  • Demonstrates a conceptual understanding of Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD)
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
 
This position requires the following background clearances: 
  • PA Child Abuse History clearance
  • PA State Police Criminal Records Check
  • An FBI Criminal Background Check
