Columbus Crew is seeking a dynamic and highly collaborative communications professional to lead our corporate communications strategy for all club properties, including the Crew, Field, Historic Crew Stadium, the OhioHealth Performance Center and Astor Park

This position will report to the Sr. Director of Communications and will work in lockstep with the Chief Marketing Officer as they develop proactive communication strategies that support commercial, community, brand initiatives, and more.

They must have a passion for great storytelling and a knack for driving brand awareness, affinity and engagement. This individual will regularly work with Club leadership and executives and will frequently work with Crew players at all levels (First Team, Crew 2, Academy) to help plan, coordinate and execute off-field media opportunities for stakeholders.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with department leads to develop and execute a thoughtful corporate communications strategy for the Club.
  • Establish and own media relationships with local, national and international media, with a focus on community, lifestyle, business and non-sports outlets
  • Identify unique and interesting front office & business storylines to generate media coverage and increase brand awareness.
  • Collaborate with Haslam Sports Group and Cleveland Browns communications leaders as thought partners
  • Manage and earn media placements for off-field first team players and coaches in publications.
  • Lead the creation and distribution of written assets, including press releases and media advisories, internal communications calendars, pitch lists and
  • Manage internal communications including oversight of daily news clippings and media monitoring
  • Develop messaging points and other key assignments to support internal and external communications goals
  • Manage Executive media opportunities including interviews, speaking engagements and beyond
  • Prepare talking points and messaging for Club executives and spokespersons
  • Evaluate and manage all inbound front office & business media requests
  • Develop Corporate Sponsorship announcement communication strategies
  • Attend Crew and MLS events to represent communications team as needed
  • Assist the Communications department staff in managing the organization’s existing suite of media monitoring tools and analytics, compiling timely reports to inform and educate internal stakeholders.
  • Assist in annual award nominations and balloting across both soccer and business communications
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Required skills, experience & abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience working in a communications/public relations role, either in a communications environment (in-house or agency) or within a sports team required
  • Communications capabilities desired include an ability to:
    • Align communications strategies with organizational purpose and values
    • Identify and address communications problems proactively
  • Conduct formative and evaluative research to underpin communications strategies and tactics
  • Communicate effectively across a full range of platforms and technologies
    Proficiency in programs such as Adobe InDesign Preferred, proficiency in Adobe Photoshop a plus
  • Strong PR background with a proven ability to drive earned brand awareness
  • Must be a curious, critical thinker who wants to understand why we do what we do as a department, as well as the broader business goal
  • Exceptional writing ability and proficiency with AP Style
  • Ability to establish working relationships with a variety of media and community contacts (such as newspapers, TV, radio, social media influencers, etc.)
  • Previous experience building targeted media pitch lists and project research targeted towards reaching communications measurable objectives
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make quick decisions using sound judgment
  • Proactive, reliable and responsible self-starter with excellent attention to detail and commitment to learn and think critically
  • Highly organized planner with exceptional time-management skills
  • Exceptional project management skills with ability to manage people/projects, delegate responsibility and provide follow-through on multiple projects
  • Passion for sports preferred as well as familiarity/knowledge of the sport of soccer and MLS
  • Strong knowledge of industry technologies and trends and willingness to stay up to date on best practices
  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends and holidays
