Accounting and Finance: Controller/Director of Finance

Austin FC joined Major League Soccer (MLS) as the league’s 27th club in January 2019.  In June 2021, Austin FC began play in the new, 100% privately financed, $260 million, state-of-the-art Q2 Stadium.

Austin FC is actively seeking an experienced Controller to support our Club and provide expert financial accounting assistance to all departments in the Team, Stadium and Training Center entities that represent Austin FC’s overall operations.

In this role, you will be responsible for preparing, reporting and maintaining the company’s financial data. This position will report to the Vice President of Finance and contribute to the overall success of the organization by effectively managing the accounting function and all financial accounting tasks relative to the company’s operations. This position will also interact with Major League Soccer’s (the “League”) accounting department to facilitate all League related financial interactions, including the annual reporting process to the League.

 You Will:
  • Direct and monitor all aspects of accounting operations including general ledger, receivables, payables, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting; and
  • Be responsible for timely monthly close including: bank reconciliations, all month end cash and other entries, account reconciliations, intercompany entries, accruals, accounts receivable, and accounts payables; and 
  • Coordinate and prepare monthly internal financial statements and monthly director reports for departments; and
  • Assist VP, Finance in managing the annual budget process; and
  • Supervise, provide guidance, and develop Staff Accountant and Jr. Staff Accountant positions in the facilitation of day-to-day operations; and
  • Work directly with departments to establish billing schedules for receivables and ensure timely invoicing and collection of receivables for cash flow purposes; and
  • Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606; and 
  • Review, record, and pay settlements with League; and 
  • Coordinate activities of external auditors and annual audit process; and
  •  Assist with annual tax compliance tasks including 1099s; and  
  •  Responsible for monthly sales tax calculation, remittance and any associated entries; and
  •  Serve as a liaison to the 4ATX Foundation; examine and assist with budgeting, revenue, expense, reporting, quarterly financial statements, and 
  • Be responsible for general bank account maintenance, ACH, wire, transfers; and
  •  Evaluate the accounting and internal control systems and evaluate the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting databases, as needed; and 
  • Other duties as assigned.

You Have:
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
  •  A minimum of 7 years’ experience in an accounting environment.
  • Master’s degree, CPA, and/or Public Accounting Experience strongly preferred. 
  • Prior sports and entertainment industry experience a plus, but not required.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and written, with diverse audiences.
  •  Extremely knowledgeable in GAAP accounting, accounting practices/systems, financial data processing, consolidation, financial reporting, audit and tax. 
  • Strong work ethic with an eye for detail.
  •  Ability to prioritize workload to manage time and tasks and delegate responsibilities in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, specifically strong Excel/spreadsheet skills, knowledge of current technologies and commitment to remain up to date with industry best practices.
  • Proven experience utilizing an ERP system such as Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains, Netsuite, etc.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  •  A commitment to diversity and inclusion both internally and externally. 
  • English language proficiency is essential and Spanish/English bilingual skills are a plus. Additional languages – even better.
