As the first in-house legal counsel at USA Triathlon, the position is responsible for leading organizational strategic and tactical legal initiatives. This team member is essential to USA Triathlon’s continued focus on being a leader in SafeSport, risk management and general business practices. We are looking for an intrinsically motivated, highly collaborative team player, who is detail oriented and a creative problem solver.  

 Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance to USA Triathlon leadership team, including anticipating and identifying areas of risk both internally and externally
  • Lead risk and crisis management, including insurance renewals, serve as insurance broker liaison, provide event and event services risk support
  • Lead SafeSport and anti-doping policies, processes, enforcement and oversight
  • Lead governance policies, processes and by-laws
  • Provide legal advice on a variety of internal and external matters, and company strategies and programs
  • Draft, review and approve internal and external business policies and processes 
  • Lead contract standardization and assist with negotiations; review all vendor, contractor, partner and volunteer agreements 
  • Ensure that the organization remains in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Advise and help draft athlete selection criteria language, and coordinate with the United States Olympic Committee Ombudsman’s office to ensure the procedures are in line with Olympic and Paralympic standards
  • Conduct legal research and review organization’s litigation strategy pertaining to legal actions, support our defense and coordinate with outside counsel as necessary

Required Qualifications
  •  Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
  • Ability to be licensed to practice law and in good standing in the state of Colorado
  • 5-plus years of relevant experience 
  • Exceptional business acumen and leadership skills
  • Experience working on governance matters and with a Board of Directors
  • Risk management, sport and general business contract experience a plus
  • Clear, concise communicator with outstanding advocacy skills
  •  Excellent judgment 
  • Takes initiative and is self-motivated
