Job Summary:

The USEF seeks a Director of Compliance (DOC) to help manage the compliance functions of the organization.  Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the DOC is primarily responsible for overseeing and managing the Compliance Program with specific emphasis on competition inspection/evaluation and competition standards compliance/enforcement.  Duties include, but are not limited to:

Compliance Program
  • Developing, maintaining and revising policies and procedures for the general operation of the Compliance Program and its related activities, subject to CEO approval;
  • Revising the Compliance Program as needed in light of changes in the needs of the organization;
  • Overseeing and monitoring the implementation of the Compliance Program;
  • Managing Compliance Department staff;
  • Developing an annual compliance work plan in conjunction with the CEO;
  • Reporting on a regular basis on the progress of the Compliance Program;
  • Assisting the CEO with risk management;
  • Assisting with departmental and other audits as directed by the CEO.
  • Assisting with reviewing and updating policies and procedures as directed by the CEO or General Counsel.
Competition Standards Compliance/Enforcement
  • Developing a responsible and effective Competition Evaluation and Standards Compliance Program to ensure enforcement of competition standards;
  • Recruit and manage talented individuals capable of evaluating and reporting on competition compliance in accordance with the program specifications;
  • Coordinating external compliance review and monitoring activities related to competition standards and licensed officials.

In addition to the above duties, other duties and special projects may also be assigned by the CEO.  This job description is not exhaustive and the job holder will be required to carry out, from time to time, tasks in addition to the above that will be both reasonable and within their capabilities.

The USEF Director of Compliance must be:
  • A well-organized and self-directed individual who is a team player;
  • A level-headed and clear communicator;
  • An excellent facilitator who is experienced in resolving conflicts between different parties;
  • High energy, resilient, committed, reliable and proactive individual with a desire to succeed and consistently deliver;
  • Fair, modest and willing to scrutinize all the facts without making a snap judgment; and
  • Intelligent and willing to continue learning.

The USEF Director of Compliance must possess:
  • The strength to stand behind difficult decisions;
  • Polished people skills and the ability to communicate and cooperate up, down, and across the employee chain;
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills; and
  • A firm grasp of the business.

Job Specifications:

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree required.  Advanced degree preferred.  In extraordinary cases, industry experience may substitute for degree requirement.

EXPERIENCE
Three – five years of professional experience in the horse industry required.   More specific experience with equestrian competitions and knowledge of USEF rules preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to move safely and effectively around competition grounds while walking over variable terrain during unpredictable weather conditions for extended periods.  Position requires 30 - 40% travel, but could vary seasonally.
