At NYRA, the simultaneous operation of live racing, simulcasting, facilities construction, wagering activities, and arena functioning leads to a challenging environment from an accounting perspective.  Financial information related to the above activities exists outside of the company’s general ledger system, resulting in extensive reconciliation procedures and analyses in order to ensure completeness, accuracy and proper cutoff.
The Controller is responsible for directing, coordinating, maintaining, and controlling the accounting systems that protect the assets of NYRA; Monitors department policies and procedures and recommends improvements consults with the senior management team, participates in establishing and implementing major goals and objectives and serves as a resource in all aspects of accounting; Ensures integrity of internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions; Oversees general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed asset management, etc.; Oversees and controls collection of revenue; Ensures that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and NYRA procedures.  
The Controller provides leadership through development, coaching and mentoring for improving performance and enhancing the company culture (e.g., NYRA’s mission, shared values and supporting behaviors).
Essential functions of the Controller include but are not limited to the following:
  • Oversees the preparation of daily, monthly, annual and other periodic financial statements and reports;
  • Ensures that financial and accounting statements, records, and reports and filings are accurate and timely. Provides useful and informative reports and data. Accurately conveys NYRA’s financial position;
  • Ensures that accounting records and reports are in compliance with GAAP and government Reviews new accounting pronouncements for applicability and compliance. Cooperates with and assists external auditors as appropriate;
  • Ensures that all employees are well informed of accounting policies, procedures, and regulations. Facilitates consistency at all levels of accounting;
  • Oversees hiring and succession planning for the department. Assesses staffing requirements and fills open positions with qualified candidates. Provides leadership to accounting personnel through effective objective setting, delegation and communication. Conducts meetings to ensure that personnel are well informed of changes in programs, policies and procedures; Ensures that department’s training and development needs are met and provides assistance and support as needed. Conducts performance appraisals as assigned. Provides feedback to accounting staff and suggestions for improved performance. Formulates and implements employee corrective actions, as needed;
  • Creates appropriate department policies and procedures and updates as needed. Ensures that policies are in accordance with evolving regulations, legal requirements and industry trends;
  • Ensures that department functions are conducted in accordance with established principles, standards, and legal requirements; that Company assets are safeguarded and preserved; that Department personnel are effective and efficient; and that positive business relations exist with auditors, government officials, and trade professionals;
  • Ensures coordination and effective working relations exist with other departments, provides assistance, as needed;
  • Establishes and maintains direction of the department encouraging employees to use sound business decisions.

  • BS in Accounting, CPA or MBA preferred;
  • 10 – 15 years public and/or private Accounting experience;
  • Knowledge of GAAP and principles;
  • Knowledge of internal controls over financial reporting;
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes and regulations
  • Ability to take initiative in improving processes, asking questions and communicating with colleagues in order to prepare quality financial reports;
  • A quick study and enthusiastic about learning the horse racing business;
  • Detail-oriented and analytical; 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team player and diplomatic when giving feedback or seeking information, even under demanding deadlines; values being part of a culturally diverse workforce; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Determination and willingness to see projects through to completion; 
  • Comfortable with financial systems including Great Plains, Management Reporter and other information systems.
