Summary
USA Fencing is seeking a motivated, thoughtful and organized individual to serve as the Director of Sports Medicine. The Director of Sports Medicine will be responsible for the management of the organization’s efforts to support the health and wellness of elite athletes and the membership at large. This position will report to the Senior Director of Sports Performance and will involve frequent interactions with National Office staff and USA Fencing members. 



Primary Duties



  • Deliver high-performance medical care based on professional licensure and standards for appropriate practice. Medical care includes emergency care, treatment of injuries, and the use of active care, therapeutic modalities, and soft tissue care.  
  • Work collaboratively and communicate with staff and coaches to implement the enhancement of athletic performance and the prevention of potential injuries through programming, technologies, and other measures, while maintaining appropriate compliance with privacy laws.
  • Travel to assigned World Cups, Grand Prix’s, Zonal Championships, and World Championships and domestic events to provide medical coverage as needed for USA Fencing athletes.
  • Liaise with national team athletes in relation to the scheduling of appointments for orthopedic, physical therapy, dental, chiropractic, massage services etc. as appropriate to the performance needs of the athlete.
  • Be available as required as the first point of contact for national team athletes in relation to a physical or medical enquiry or emergency.
  • Develop elite athlete treatment protocols to include but not limited to treatment scheduling, recovery, emergency plans, anti-doping, sports medicine coverage, etc.
  • Manage electronic medical records for elite athletes, including management of athlete monitoring system.
  • Coordinate National Team medical supplies.
  • Act as the organization’s primary representative in all matters related to anti-doping.
  • Liaise with USA Fencing and USOPC health insurance providers in relation to the payment of athlete medical bills, copays, prescriptions and deductibles for national team athletes.
  • Develop a national network of medical professionals for additional sports medicine support.
  • Coordinate and assign Sports Medicine coverage for USA Fencing’s domestic and international events. 
  • In consultation with USA Fencing staff, provide content and materials for publication on the USA Fencing website, American Fencing magazine, social media channels, etc.  
  • Participate in policy-making decisions relative to sports medicine, including management of all Covid-19 medical protocols as they relate to USA Fencing events.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Sports Medicine Resource Team and a member of the USA Fencing Mental Health Resource Team.
  • Assist USA Fencing with designing and maintaining a database of patient contacts and reported adverse events that occur at USA Fencing sanctioned and international fencing events.

Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training, Master’s preferred
  • Current Health Care Provider CPR certification
  • Documented administration experience in sports medicine
  • Experience working with elite high-performance athletes
  • 3 years of clinical experience
  • Documented significant manual therapy experience

Starting Salary Range  
$70,000-$90,000

Other Information



  • The USA Fencing National Office is located in Colorado Springs, CO; ability to work from National Office preferred, however a remote worksite may be considered.
  • This is a full time exempt position with competitive pay and flexible schedule. 
  • Travel required and must have ability to work a flexible schedule, including weeknights and weekends as needed.
  • The successful Director of Sports Medicine will be required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by January 1, 2022.
