The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Director of Career Development who will work within the department’s Cameron Institute for Student-Athlete Development.

The Cameron Institute for Student-Athlete Development aspires to foster an environment in which each student-athlete can reach his or her full potential, aiming to be a national model of student-athlete development units, preparing student-athletes for success both during and after college. The Cameron Institute is founded on three critical pillars of development for our student-athletes and coaches: leadership and personal development, career development, and community engagement.

Description of Position:  
The Director of Career Development will be involved in designing, implementing, evaluating, and delivering broad and complex career-focused programs, assessments, and experiences incorporating the needs of Cal student-athletes. This includes creating systems that support student-athletes in the career development process to optimize post-graduate opportunities and outcomes. Though primarily an internal-facing role, this individual will leverage and foster relationships across campus, including the UC Berkeley Career Center and organizations supporting the career development process. This position will also manage and administer a comprehensive alumni and community partner platform, engaging individuals in mentorship and career-related opportunities for Cal student-athletes. This position will also manage a small portfolio of athletic teams focused on the holistic development of Cal student-athletes. The position also has supervisory oversight of two Student-Athlete Development Advisors within the unit.

Responsibilities:
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates career development programming and training that aligns with industry standards and best practices. Regularly evaluates all programs and systems to ensure they are supporting the Golden Path Advisory System and preparing student-athletes for careers upon graduation.
  • Works closely with supervisor and other Directors in the Cameron Institute in facilitating all career-related programming, ensuring it supports the mission of the unit and is scalable for all teams.
  • Manages and administers a technology platform to engage alumni and community partners in service of mentoring and providing career-related opportunities for student-athletes. Ensure programming developed aligns with the Golden Path Advisory System.
  • Measures and tracks career-related benchmarks (e.g., resume development, internship opportunities) and post-graduate outcomes of student-athletes.
  • Serves as department liaison with partners across campus to help integrate student-athletes into programs offered by campus.
  • Develops relationships with constituents external to campus to provide support for career development programming and leverages their capabilities to improve the experience for student-athletes. 
  • Serves as an advisor for student-athletes on a small portfolio of teams in the Golden Path Advisory System. Works with the Head Coach and staff of teams they advise providing tailored holistic support to their programs.
  • Supervises two Student-Athlete Development Advisors within the unit. Monitors employee performance and provides direction and assistance. Regularly evaluates employee performance, handles disciplinary issues if needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including professional development.

    Required Qualifications:   
  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Curriculum development and facilitation experience.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements; ability to identify problems and develop original ideas with systems to solve them.
  • Skilled in project management and balancing multiple high-level priorities.
  • Effective communication skills and social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to develop consensus in sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Knowledge of common computer application programs, including the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment; ability to evaluate risk likelihood and consequences.
  • Client services oriented; has good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
  • Position requires exceptional political sensitivity, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively across and outside the organization at all levels in a collaborative manner.
  • Knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures.
  • 2-3 years of experience in Student-Athlete Development or Career Development/Services.
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in Student-Athlete Development or Career Development/Services.
  • Supervision Experience.
  • Master’s Degree.
