The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking a Senior Associate Athletic Director, Chief Development Officer.  This position will report to the Director of Athletics’ and be a part of his Leadership Team and will also work closely with the Vice Chancellor for University Relations.

As Cal Athletics begins a new era under new Athletics Director Jim Knowlton, this position will be critical to the success of the department and helping Cal Athletic achieve its tremendous fundraising potential. Additionally, in 2019 the University will formally announce its new comprehensive campaign, which will place a priority on Athletics, and this position will be instrumental in helping the department achieve its goals. 

Description of Position:  The Senior Associate Athletic Director is responsible for managing and accessing a wide range of development programs and activities to achieve the fundraising goals of the department and university.  This position will frequently interact with Athletics’ top donors to aid in the philanthropy, stewardship, and cultivation efforts. This position will be key in maintaining the 30-sport effort that is consistently ranked as one of the top programs in the country.

The Director oversees a full-time staff of approximately 18 employees and interacts regularly with Athletics staff and coaches, members of the donor community, and key University partners (University Relations California Alumni Association staff, etc.). General management responsibilities include developing, implementing, and assessing short and long-range strategies for achieving departmental fundraising goals, setting and monitoring the unit's operating budget, and motivating, directing, and evaluating Development staff. This position requires a high-level of leadership and management ability, as well as vision and strategic planning skills. Position will oversee all efforts for the Development office, including principal gifts, major gifts, capital campaigns, annual giving, stewardship, communications, donor relations, gift reconciliation, and special events.
  • Manages a portfolio of principal and major gift prospects, coordinating solicitation strategies with other assigned principal and major gift staff members. Interacts with donors at home and away Football, Men’s Basketball, and other select events.
  • Develops and monitors existing capital campaign for current Athletics’ facility renovation projects.
  • Accountable for creation and successful implementation of a visionary strategic plan for development within Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Establishes, monitors, and manages goals for each area of the strategic plan and assumes responsibility for meeting these goals.
  • Leads, manages, and motivates staff to achieve individual, program, and overall fundraising goals. Develops performance standards for staff and fosters a positive and collaborative working environment through training, feedback, and personal example.
  • Acts as the primary development liaison to the Head Coaches. Consults regularly with coaches to leverage their networks to enhance solicitation and stewardship activities.
  • Assists Athletic Director with meeting preparation and speeches for fundraising purposes. 
  • Monitors, analyzes, and reports on overall fundraising results versus goals to internal and external constituencies. Prepares and delivers reports to volunteer groups as needed.
  • Develops and monitors operating budget for the department's development programs. Forecasts expenses, evaluates the cost-effectiveness of programs, and reallocates funds as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:   
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a manager in the field of fundraising, preferably in both annual giving and major gifts. Additional experience in sales, marketing, and public relations also desirable.
  • Proven record of accomplishment that demonstrates initiative, creativity, and managerial and interpersonal skills, preferably in a university setting.
  • Proven success in managing, mentoring, motivating, and retaining a professional fundraising staff. Ability to motivate others including peers, direct reports, coaches, and volunteers.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills. Willingness to take risks and solve problems creatively.
  • Well-developed leadership skills, as demonstrated through an ability to appreciate and articulate the university's vision, values, and programs to donors, volunteers, and development staff in an engaging, motivating, and inspirational manner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to make a compelling case for supporting the priorities of the Athletic Department in a complex internal and external fundraising environment.
  • Willingness to work as an integral part of the team.
  • Familiarity with the culture and environment of Intercollegiate Athletics and the ability to work within this environment.
  • Knowledge of benefit-linked giving, athletics, and university development.
  • Ability to develop and implement long- and short-term strategic plans.
  • Possess highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to be diplomatic, manage internal politics, and build consensus in a complex environment.  Ability to reconcile competing interests and build support from competing constituencies.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, and database tools.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Resilient with ability to remain focused while under pressure.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Must be able to travel and work nights and weekends as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree.
  • Knowledge of the University of California, Berkeley and its alumni and friends is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area philanthropic community.
  • Baseline, big-picture knowledge of various intersections within development and the other External Affairs units, including marketing, sales, ticketing, branding and media relations.
