Administration/General Management: Athletic Director

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of more than 275 staff members and coaches and sponsors 30 varsity sports programs.  These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in the various sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  We are currently seeking an Associate Athletics Director, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging who will work within the Athletic department’s leadership team.

Description of Position:  
The Associate Athletics Director, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging supports Department-wide strategic initiatives as well as the day-to-day administration.  The position will report to the Athletics Director, will serve on the department Director’s Cabinet, and will have a strong, ongoing liaison relationship with the University’s People and Culture office and the Division of Equity & Inclusion.

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and administering diversity, equal employment opportunity and affirmative action efforts in order to comply with government legislation and management directives and support equity and inclusion programs. They serve as a technical leader who provides guidance to all levels within the organization, utilizing specialized diversity, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity expertise within area of responsibility to resolve highly complex issues. Internal and external contacts often pertain to significant diversity, affirmative action, equal employment opportunity programs. May serve in a lead capacity, providing guidance to other professionals in department.

Responsibilities:
  • Applies advanced diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) concepts to the development of training curriculum and may assist with organization diversity training. 
  • Develops, implements, and monitors specific DEIB programs and initiatives that will increase hiring and retention, and improve morale of staff, with a focus on underrepresented and historically marginalized populations. Communicates DEIB policies and programs, as well as affirmative action and equal opportunity employment goals, to employees, student-athletes, and other constituents.
  • Ensures that Athletics’ DEIB priorities are embedded in all the work and levels of the department. Integrates affirmative action, equal opportunity employment and DEIB programs and concepts into human resources policies and practices.
  • Uses both qualitative and quantitative data to support and drive development of systemic initiatives that improve the experiences and access to resources, career opportunities and mobility, and information for historically marginalized and underrepresented groups.
  • Sets up systemic change initiatives using data analysis and metrics; training; employee engagement programming; and policy and procedure updates. Recommends improvements in business processes to increase institutional effectiveness and attainment of diversity goals. Consults with organization managers and supervisors on DEIB issues.
  • Oversee and guide the Athletics Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce, and help integrate recommendations from that group into the department culture. Develop a DEIB Action Plan to support the effort of the department strategic plan.
  • Serve as liaison to sport administrators and coaches by addressing team specific concerns related to DEIB. Work with coaches and Compliance to assist with recruitment of student-athletes from underrepresented populations.
  • Work in conjunction with the Cameron Institute to ensure DEIB is integrated into all student-athlete development efforts, provide support on student-athlete programming, ensure an inclusive atmosphere for all student-athletes, and assist in the evaluation of the program effectiveness and impact.
  • Serves on Director’s Cabinet and as a senior advisor to the Athletic Director on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging matters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:   
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or participating in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts/programming in complex organizations.
  • Demonstrates advanced judgment and technical experience in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and developing recommendations, particularly around DEIB.
  • Demonstrates advanced level of political and organizational acumen. Demonstrates the ability to communicate and interact effectively with all levels in the diverse and multicultural environment of the Campus.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of organizational policies and procedures; knowledge of functional area and understands how work may impact other areas.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable state and federal laws as they pertain to employment and EEO requirements.
  • Possesses advanced level skills required to gather, organize and perform analyses on diverse equal employment opportunity / affirmative action programs and initiatives. Presents findings and makes recommendations that are significant to a department or unit, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with methodologies and practices for organizational change that can meaningfully improve department climate and employee engagement.
  • Possesses broad knowledge of other areas of Human Resources, including Learning and Development, Talent Acquisition and Management, and Employee Engagement.
  • Advanced computer applications skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Google suite.
  • Must be able to multi-task effectively, demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making, be an effective problem solver, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines and to establish goals and work load priorities, and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
  • Excellent written communication skills to prepare a variety of correspondence, reports, policies and procedures, agreements, and training documents.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Previous experience working in college athletics or professional sports.
