POSITION PURPOSE
 Assistant Racing Secretary works under the Racing Secretary to oversees all aspect of the racing operations including field sizes, purses, handicapped weights, the condition book, and all records regarding horse ownership, race applications, and race results. Main objective is to create medium to large field sizes of well-matched competitors (the horses) that can run safely and yield a profit from wagering.
  
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
 
  • Assists with the planning and arranging of racing schedules and assigns handicapped weights to horses; including analyzing official workout and past performance data to create races between horses of equal ability and experience.
  • Assists with the handicapping of each horse by assigning weight it will carry by utilizing knowledge of handicapping other data including age, sex, total winnings, and distances of races won.
  • Assist with purse distribution data and regulates these amounts on a daily basis.
  • Assists the Racing Secretary in planning the types of races to schedule and determine the purse for each race in order to create programs that will have well-matched competitors that will yield a profit to the track. 
  • Reviews all applications for race entry or permission to train a horse for competition at the track.
  • Accepts application and entrance fee from horse owners and maintains records of persons with financial interest in each horse.
  • Assists with writing and editing the condition book.
  • May direct the employees who record official racing results; Proofreads racing information to be published in various mediums including racing form and Daily Racing Program.
  • Coordinates official records regarding racing results to keep on file in regard to each horse’s ability.
  • Collaborates with the employees that receive stall applications and handle allocations.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate professional relationships with regulatory agencies, racing industry leaders, community leaders, and others that may serve as strategic partners.
  • Conducts or reviews detailed management and operational analyses to ensure ongoing success and efficiency within the department.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and collaborates with Director of Safety for continuous improvements.
  • Additional duties as assigned. 
 
 QUALIFICATIONS
  •  Knowledge of horse racing and training.
  • Minimum 5 years of racing management or industry experience.
  • Strong computer skills to include effective working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field preferred, but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong Interpersonal skill.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Excellent Organizational skills

 REPETITIVE MOTIONS:                            Frequent and regular movements using the wrists, hands, and fingers.
 AVERAGE VISUAL ABILITIES:               Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to view computer screens and documents.
 PHYSICAL STRENGTH:                           Medium to heavy work; requiring stooping and exerting up to 25 lbs. of force lifting, carrying, and or packing.
  
COMMUNICATION AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
 REASONING ABILITY:                              Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to interpret instructions.
MATHEMATICS ABILITY:                         Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages, and to draw and interpret graphs.
 LANGUAGE ABILITY:                               Fluency in English. Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing.
