Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment, home of the 2004 Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning and five-time world champion Tampa Bay Storm, is seeking a talented individual to add to our Senior Management Team. The Vice President of Legal Affairs will provide a broad range of in-house legal services. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of basic contract and corporate business principles, with a familiarity of sports marketing/business strategies.

 

POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:
This role works directly for EVP & General Counsel to provide analysis and counsel on legal and corporate policy issues and business strategic planning. Serve as legal counsel and responsible for handling a variety of complex legal projects in areas including, but not limited to, sports and entertainment, corporate, transactional, intellectual property, contractual, compliance and employment law.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice, counseling, research, and other various legal services to the organization on corporate, contractual and administrative/civil matters
  • Provide legal counseling on all issues related to employment law, marketing, corporate finance, commercial disputes, social media, media, non-profit law, intellectual property, immigration, risk management, and other compliance matters.
  • Prepare, review, negotiate and draft agreements for events, sponsorships, television broadcasts, venues, promotions, and media activities
  • Review, edit and draft a variety of documents to include sponsorship, vendor, service provider, consulting and licensing agreements, NDA’s, terms of use and routine due diligence forms
  • Assist with the development of internal company policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the management and enforcement of NHL, AFL, Lightning Hockey, Storm Football and associated naming rights partners trademark portfolio
  • Provide legal counsel on issues arising from actual or anticipated lawsuits.
  • Manage and support corporate litigation efforts including the hiring and management of external counsel when necessary
  • Write and administer complex vendor, client, and employment contracts
  • Provide legal counsel internally to department managers and staff on a wide range of legal issues, i.e. compliance, employment, etc.
  • Review sales, advertising and marketing promotional materials
  • Oversee corporate record keeping including contract databases and filing systems

  • Ability to draft well structured, concise agreements, correspondence, memorandums, and other legal documents
  • Ability to work autonomously, with minimal supervision, and handle multiple projects in accordance with deadlines
  • Ability to recognize and appreciate varying and conflicting interests of internal stakeholders and have a demonstrated ability to build consensus among multiple constituents.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess litigation risk and effectively resolve complex legal issues prior to time-consuming and unnecessary associated expenses.
  • Superior organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to advise clients regularly, clearly and consistently
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills

 

Education:

  • Juris doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of substantive experience in commercial transactions including drafting and negotiating contracts and agreements, leases, licensing and other financial matters.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of senior level experience as an in-house legal counsel consulting with senior level staff members on matters of significance affecting routine and critical business challenges.
  • State Bar admission and good standing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sports and corporate law, intellectual property, basic contract principles, and basic financial principles
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Software Suite including Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Must be willing to relocate to the Tampa Bay metropolitan area
