Job Summary:
The Director of Corporate Communications for the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vinik Sports Group (VSG) will lead efforts to establish and maintain our consistent “voice of the brand” internally and externally to develop and enhance the image of the organization.  Specifically, this individual will lead and manage our growing needs around internal communication, crisis management, community support and collaboration with all departments inside the Tampa Bay Lightning and externally with VSG partners including Strategic Property Partners (and the downtown Tampa Water Street initiative), the Vinik Family Foundation, Tampa area sports teams and other community and government organizations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the corporate communications function for VSG 
  • Work closely with the Vinik Family Office communications team – to collaborate on all external aspects of our brand voice and messaging to ensure alignment with our owner
  • Responsible for all non-team media relations including:
    • Government, State, City and County Media Relations
    • Community Media Relations (i.e. Community Hero, DEI initiatives, etc.
    • Industry Media Relations (i.e. Sports Business Journal, Front Office Sports)
    • Local and National Media Relations as appropriate
    • Work closely with our Director of Communication and Player Relations (who oversees all team and player media relations) regarding media relations initiatives involving the General Manager, Head Coach, Coaching Staff and Alumni Players to ensure strategic communications are aligned with organizational objectives, goals and business needs
  • Oversee the strategy for all internal communication and planning including regular VSG Employee meetings, leadership summits, and key announcements working closely with various members of the executive team
  • Develop an overall corporate communications strategy that aligns with VSG business objectives and goals
  • Manage media and community relations and respond to media in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Prepare detailed media reports, press releases, and speeches following organizational news
  • Cultivate meaningful relationships with key local business media 
  • Coordinate local and national media placements and interviews and prepares press kits, talking points and messaging for interviews
  • Perform communications research, monitors the progress of various communications strategies, and recommends modifications when necessary
  • Coordinate and create press releases from the CEO and other business units on the local and national level
  • Arrange media interviews, press conferences and community appearances for the CEO and other key stakeholders; provide media training/coaching as needed
  • Draft all written communication, both internal and external, for the CEO and other key stakeholders as requested
  • Collaborate with the executive team to provide consultation and innovative ideas to support organizational needs
  • Act as a liaison with the Tampa Sports Commission, NCAA and USF for media relations initiatives
  • Work with Jeff and Penny Vinik to support the media relations needs of the Vinik Family Office
  • Create overall standard operations procedures (SOP’s) as well guidelines, policies and practices to support business needs and strengthen the overall brand of the organization
  • Develop strategies and campaigns to enhance the image of the Club in collaboration with the Chief Marketing Officer and other executives and leaders
  • Act as the primary interface and spokesperson with the media for all business operations matters when appropriate
  • Manage the production and implementation of all non-team-related publications; work with the Marketing department to manage advertising commitments and provide web content as needed
  • Abide by all constitution, bylaws, rules, and regulations set forth by the NHL
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Game/Event Responsibilities:
  • Evening and weekend games as necessary

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or equivalent degree
  • A minimum of 7-10 years relevant work experience in a Corporate Business environment
  • Proven strategic leadership ability, including the ability to plan, organize, coordinate and influence 
  • Ability to build strong and collaborative relationships with all levels within the organization, leadership team and ownership
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively build a network of contacts at all levels within the industry and community, both internally and externally
  • Professional writing and public speaking skills required; on-air experience required
    Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated experience managing departmental and organizational budgets, including the creation of strategic business plans
  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential matters and information
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous projects simultaneously
  • Self-motivated, with ability to work with little direct supervision
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings as required
  • Experience with local Tampa Bay Region media outlets and Community and Government stakeholders if possible
