JOB SUMMARY: The AV Engineer is responsible for maintaining and managing of all of the audio-visual and broadcast related systems at the Comerica Center and Children’s Health StarCenters. This position will be the primary technical liaison for all of the tenants and events (tournaments, concerts, shows, games, etc) that are hosted in our facilities. This includes communicating with event staff, gathering their technical requirements, and fulfilling those requirements before, during, and after the event itself. This includes hiring, scheduling, and managing technical part-time, event-day staff as required to fulfill the technical needs of the event. 

Essential Functions:
  • Manage and maintain all audio, video, lighting, scoreboard, and other related systems and equipment
  • Liaise with tenant and event staff in order to gather and fulfill their technical needs
  • Hire, schedule, and manage part-time, event-day technical staff 
  • Document, maintain, and organize the control rooms, racks, junction boxes, and cable plants
  • Work closely with the Arena Management, IT, and Operations teams to execute technical requirements 
  • Proactively plan, budget, and upgrade systems and equipment to ensure reliable operations 
  • Coordinate with management to ensure timely repair and replacement of failing or aging equipment
  • Create long-term, phased plans to enhance existing systems to meet current and future requirements
  • Provide technical direction and coordination as needed for lighting, audio, and video equipment
  • Establish and document procedures and protocols for operating and maintaining all AV systems
  • Perform proactive oversight and maintenance of all low-voltage cabling infrastructure
  • Create and maintain an inventory list of all systems, equipment, software, and passwords 
  • Install, run, terminate and test low-voltage cabling as needed
  • Facilitate and coordinate with TV trucks and broadcasters for parking, power, and connectivity
  • Manage, install, and repair the in-house digital signage solution, cable TV plant, and/or TVs/displays

Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements:
  • Expertise installing, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting a variety of technical AV systems
  • Demonstrate competence in the latest technologies including, but not limited to, video, audio, lighting, computers, fiber optics, projectors, switchers, av distribution and routing equipment
  • Excellent social skills and the ability to patiently, professionally, and consistently interact and communicate with people at all levels of the organization and customers such as tenant and event staff
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel both verbally and in writing 
  • Accurate, efficient, and timely execution of tasks
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized 
  • Ability to multi-task, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and work under tight deadlines
  • Must be able to work highly varied and flexible hours in support of live events, such as weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • In the event the AV Engineer conducts freelance work outside of the organization, this work must not conflict with any of their responsibilities or existing events/shows/games
  • Work environment will vary from a quiet office to a very busy and loud arena atmosphere including loud music, crowd noise, and flashing or strobing lights
  • Must also have a proven working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and work habits, building codes and safety laws to maintain all required safety trainings.
  • Must hold a valid driver license, have a clean driving record and have access to reliable transportation for the purpose of travel between various locations as required

Education and/or Experience:
  • Associates Degree plus 3 years of experience or 5 years equivalent work or military experience
  • Working knowledge of professional sports, collegiate sports, or the live entertainment industry required 
  • Working knowledge of video, audio, lighting, and/or broadcasting standards required
  • Familiarity with Crestron and Brightsign technology is preferred 
  • Experience with scoreboard and stats systems such as OES or Daktronics is required 
  • Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of live studio production such as computer-based editing, graphics, replay, and intercom systems is required 
  • Basic understand of computer networking and storage is required
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and/or CAD drawings is preferred 

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, handle objects and office tools, reach, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is exposed to an office environment, with noise levels usually moderate.
