About the Iowa Heartlanders
The Iowa Heartlanders are a professional hockey team based in Coralville, Iowa, competing in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The Iowa Heartlanders are an expansion team in their second season. The Iowa Heartlanders are the AA affiliate of the Minnesota and Iowa Wild. About the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL)
he ECHL is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in Shrewsbury, New Jersey and was established in 1988 with five teams in four states. The ECHL has grown into a coast-to-coast league with 27 teams in 20 states and two Canadian provinces and is the premier AA professional hockey league of the NHL. There have been over 700 players who have gone to play in the National Hockey League after starting their careers in the ECHL.
Job Description Overview
The Iowa Heartlanders are seeking Off-Ice officials for the 2023-2024 season. The ECHL Off-Ice Officials serves as a part-time liaison between the officials and the teams before, during, and after games and is a crucial part of the game-day operations. The Off-Ice official is responsible for ensuring official team rosters, game statistics, time-on-ice, and records, in a timely matter, and executing all game functions (game clock, penalty clock, goal lights, etc.) in conjunction with the bylaws and the game and the East Coast Hockey League.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities vary based on the position assigned, in general, an Off-Ice Official is responsible for the collection, accurate recording, and expert interpretation of the game statistics, timing, reviewing, and recording game results. The following Off-Ice Official positions are staffed each game:
- Crew Chief
- Official Scorer
- Transition
- Clock/Scoreboard
- Penalty Timekeeper
- Home Penalty Box Attendant
- Visiting Team Penalty Box Attendant
- South Goal Judge
- North Goal Judge
Some but not all duties of the Off-Ice Officials include:
· Coordinate with ECHL On-Ice Officials, Iowa Heartlanders and visiting hockey operations to review game rosters, starting line-ups, statistics and any changes before, during and after each game.
· Setup, test and operate all technical equipment including ECHL review systems, game computer and time-on-ice computers and printers.
· Review official scoresheet for accuracy and coordinate any changes with the ECHL On-Ice Officials and the Heartlanders and visiting hockey operations departments.
· Accurately interpret, track and record in-game statistics, shots, goals, assists, shots, plus-minus, penalties, power plays, penalty kills, time-on-ice, etc. in conjunction with ECHL rules. Award points, plus-minus, penalties, shots and saves based on in-game proceedings.
· Making the official designing on all goals, including the goal scorer and assist. Reporting this information to the Official Scorekeeper and to the Public Address Announcer.
· Verbalizing events so that nothing gets missed by those entering them into the scoring system computers. Reviewing events on video to verify decisions or make changes for accuracy.
· Operate the official game clock and record all penalties and penalty situations. Track and maintain Heartlanders and visiting unofficial time-on-ice reports. Manage home and visiting penalty boxes and serve as goal judges.
· Manage media time-outs based on established League guidelines. Communicating with the On-Ice officials and fellow Off-Ice officials when media time-outs are approaching, completed, and indicated accordingly.
· Illuminating the red light when the referee signals that a goal has been scored or there is a timeout on the ice.
· Other responsibilities as assigned.
Experience
The candidate must posses the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, or demonstrate a relentless willingness to learn and perform.
· Must have a complete understanding of the sport of ice hockey, specifically the East Coast Hockey League, including rules, regulations, bylaws and scoring, or demonstrate a relentless willingness to learn.
· Understanding of scoring system used in professional sports leagues and excellent understanding of the ECHL playing rules.
· Strong computer skills, including but not limited to MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Current understanding of the ECHL Hockey information and Tracking system used for scoring and recording statistics (or willingness and ability to learn the system).
· Should have the ability to read, interpret, and understand the playing rules, bulletins, policies and procedures as distributed by the ECHL, as well as ale to operation communication equipment and other technology needed to effectively officiate the game.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while handling multiple projects at once in a professional manner with extreme focus and concentration to ensure complete accuracy.
· Strong organizational and time management skills, strong communication skills, both written and verbal, strong attention to detail, and must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
· Ability to demonstrate a calm demeanor, discretion and professionalism always, and especially in potentially emotional situations in this critical role.
