About The Connecticut Open
Connecticut Open is a women’s WTA tournament held at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale featuring women’s singles and doubles as well as PowerShares Men’s Legends. As a not-for-profit 501c3 charitable organization, its mission is to leverage the excitement of world-class women’s tennis to benefit the community and maximize support for women’s, youth and other causes in Connecticut. Owned by the State of Connecticut, the tournament generates $10+ million in regional economic impact. The Connecticut Open is prominently featured domestically through 40+ hours of combined coverage on ESPN2 and ESPN3.  The event is also broadcast internationally to 160 countries and delivers more than 15 million viewers worldwide.
This three month internship offers the unique opportunity to become involved in every aspect of marketing, event planning and ticket sales planning for a large-scale, international professional sporting event.  The internship is designed to provide support to the Marketing department in an effort to maximize awareness of the Connecticut Open.  This position will also provide support to the Tournament Manager in various aspects of the operations in running the tournament.  There will five (5) available positions for this internship.
The internship will take place at the Connecticut Tennis Center located at 45 Yale Avenue in New Haven, CT.
This three month internship offers the unique opportunity to learn about marketing, ticket sales and partnership marketing for a large-scale international professional women’s tennis tournament.  This position is designed to support the Consumer Marketing and Ticket Sales Department in day-to-day operations, including Box Office management.  The intern will report to the Ticket Sales and Marketing Coordinator while working closely with the Director, Consumer Development and Marketing.

·         Dates: Monday, June 4 – Sunday, August 26, 2018
·         Interns for the Connecticut Open will be required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.  As the tournament nears, hours will increase, and evenings and weekends will be required prior to and during the tournament.
·         Candidates must be able to work the entire duration of the tournament.
·         Student must be pro-active and hard-working, detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
·         Strong organizational skills and computer experience with MS Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Word. 
·         Tennis background is a plus, but not required.
·         Open to undergraduate and graduate level students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
·         Student must receive academic credit to be eligible and will be required to submit documentation from the college or university.
·         No financial compensation is available.  Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the student.
·         Pre-Tournament
o    Represent the Tournament at community events to help maximize awareness of the Connecticut Open
§  Research events taking place throughout the summer in which the Connecticut Open should be present.
o   Assist with fulfillment of benefits outlined in Partnership agreements
o    Help with planning TOURNAMENT WEEK (see below) activities and events 
o    Assist with various tournament mailings, distribution of tournament collateral materials, and outreach to partners
o    Learn and assist with lead prospecting for ticket sales
o    Connecticut Open Family Classic Tennis Tournament
§  Responsible for managing and maintaining database of participating clubs and event results
§  Assist with administrative duties including distributing materials to clubs and fielding inquiries from clubs or families
§  Assist in the planning and coordination of the Regional Tournament weekend
§  Must be present during Regional Tournament weekend July 28-29, 2018
o    Assist other departments with support as needed
·         Tournament Week
o    Support with execution of events and on-site benefits outlined in Partnership agreements
o    Assist with set-up and execution of tournament events and activities including Kid’s Day, Latino Day, Family Classic finals, etc.
o    Coordinate with house photographers and/or take photos during all tournament events and activities around the grounds (autograph sessions, clinics, play chats, etc.)
  • Prepare post tournament report and intern manual
  • Other requests as needed
  • Work in conjunction with the Ticket Sales & Marketing Coordinator to identify local not-for-profit organizations including schools, community groups, sports teams, etc. for involvement with the tournament (group sales or partnerships)
  • Research local Military organizations to assist in promoting Military Appreciation Day ticket offer and activities
  • Actively follow up with organizations and respond in a timely manner to all requests and questions
  • Maintain accurate databases of prospects and committed organizations 
  • Support the ticket department with additional sales support as needed
  • Prepare post tournament report and intern manual

  • Handle inbound calls to the tournament box office, providing a high level of customer service to answer questions and facilitate sale of individual session, packages and weeklong tickets.
  • Monitor tournament’s social media channels for posts related to customer’s concerns and issues.  
  • Assist with renewal outreach.
  • Compile research to determine potential ticket buyers, marketing partnerships, and group sales opportunities.
  • Become well versed on Connecticut Open ticket offerings, amenities and events.
  • Assist with large direct mailings related to tickets, hospitality and sponsorship services.
  • Manage all aspects of Box Plaques program including but not limited to organizing identification forms as they are returned, ordering new plaques, executing the hanging of the plaques in stadium, organizing and inventorying at end of tournament.
  • Inventory ticket office and stadium directional signage and provide new signage needs to Box Office Coordinator
    • Support Guest Services team during the tournament by providing the highest level of customer service to tournament attendees with their questions and concerns.  
    • Assist guests in stadium with locating their seat location prior to the start of each session
